LOCH END CEMETERY
Loch End Cemetery (Protestant) Catalone established 1837, incorporated March 1, 1897, Cape Breton County.
The original recording was completed on June 22, 1977 (S.F./M.C.).
The cemetery was vandalized on July 24 of 1977. It has been done over completely and the re-recording was finished on August 17, 1984 (S.F.). The Cemetery is very well kept and most of the damage done has now been repaired.
The first burial, unmarked (as are many of the early ones), was that of a MacAulay woman (Margaret MacCuish Bishop's Gr. Grandmother) who died about 3 months after arriving from Scotland. The earliest marked burial is 1836. The cemetery is still in use and the new part has recently been enlarged.
The land on which the cemetery is located was originally "MacAulay Land".
Much help in obtaining the maiden names of women buried here was given by Margaret Bishop, Flo MacMillan, Florence MacIntyre, and the late Christine Cameron. Mrs Alex (Minnie) Hunt also gave useful information.

OAKFIELD CEMETERY
Oakfield Cemetery (Protestant), Cape Breton County.
This small cemetery is located on private property, Trout Brook, on the opposite shore to Oakfield. It is well kept and has recently been re-fenced. It is no longer in use. The earliest MacLeod burial is 1860; the most recent 1948. The MacLeods are "Big Donnie's" people (former M.L.A.).
"Oakfield" is a lovely cemetery, scenically located by the Mira River on a point of land known early as "MacLeod's Point." It is meticulously kept and luckily has not yet fallen victim to the senseless vandalism inflicted on other graveyards.
According to Allister MacDonald, the man largely responsible for its care, the first burials at "Oakfield" took place between 1810 & 1815, people named MacLeod and Campbell, who lie in unmarked graves. The earliest dated burial is 1837.
The cemetery is still in use and is currently being enlarged, taking into account the increasing population in that area of Mira.

This is a "companion" cemetery to Oakfield, albeit on a much smaller scale; similarly located on the on the bank of the Mira, but further down river. It is very well maintained.
Help with maiden names of "Beloved Wives" was given by Christine MacKeigan of Horne's Road, and Flo MacMillan of of Catalone.
The earliest marked burial is 1852.
The cemetery is still in use.

BRADFORD CEMETERY
This is a private protestant cemetery.
The cemetery is located on the Mira Road, just above the end of the "Azar Straight Stretch." It is probably known mainly by hunters. The cemetery shows the neglect of years: There may be no family left to look after it.
It was suggested that the Bradfords may have been loyalists. R.J.M. can probably substantiate.
At any rate, it looks like three generations of Bradfords are buried here, if we can assume that Sarah & William were man & wife, and Daisy their daughter.

The earliest marked burial is 1866; the most recent, 1916.
Located within the Fortress of Louisbourg, National Historic Park, it is well maintained by Parks Canada.

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CEMETERY
Immaculate Conception cemetery is Roman Catholic.
As the cemetery is now, it is well kept. But most of the stones (the broken ones at least) no longer mark the graves they were intended for: An over-zealous priest was apparently responsible for removing the stones, in the course of which many were broken and some never found their way back to the cemetery. This, then, is the record of the stones that remain.
The earliest burial, according to the stones, is 1858; The most recent, 1961. The cemetery is no longer in use - The current one is directly opposite, across the main highway.

We walked on water to get to this one! It is located on a point of land that becomes an island at high tide. If some clearing isn't done - and soon - it will be a write-off in a few years. If there are more burials than these (and there likely are), the land is so overgrown with brambles and that sort of thing that they can't be located. It seems to be a private family cemetery (Directions to it were given by Kenneth Pringle). We were told locally that the bank has eroded and some stones have fallen into the water.

MACLEOD CEMETERY
This cemetery was located and recording begun on Aug. 3, 1978. Additional work was done in June 1979 and completed on September 2, 1984 (Helped by Arthur and Agnes Poushay). Very hard to find in 1978 and reached with some difficulty then and in 1979, it has since been cleaned up (with the help of a grant), a road into it has been constructed and a sign posted which designates it "MacLeod Cemetery." 40 new wooden crosses, painted white, are placed throughout which seems to indicate that a cemetery plan exists. A small flock of sheep has been penned in, perhaps to keep the grass cropped, but their droppings make walking uncomfortable, if not hazardous. The recent clearing revealed nine stones previously missed.

MACKAY PROPERTY CEMETERY
This is a "pretty" cemetery, still in use and well cared for. A tree-lined road leads down to it. There doesn't appear to be many unmarked graves. The earliest marked burial is that of pioneer John McKenzie, native of Loch Erribol, Sutherlandshire, who died in 1837. He came to Canada in 1815.

This small cemetery is located next to the United Church. In 1977, the cemetery was badly over-grown and only half the stones visible. It has since been cleaned up and now presents a neat, attractive, country-graveyard appearance. It is located across from the Black River United Church (originally Presbyterian).

SMITH CEMETERY
The land on which the cemetery is located is nicely cleared and the graves are marked with wooden crosses, painted white. There are names on all the crosses (but no dates) and "R.I.P." on each one.
Herold Frost owns the property and it was he who took us to it on Oct. 21, 1984. He told us that the Gillis graves pre-date the Smith graves and that if memory served him right, Jim Smith died in 1943 and was around 69 years old; that Benjamin Smith died in 1963 at the age of 41; and that Annie B. Smith died about 12 years ago (c. 1972) at the age of c. 70. Mr. Frost said that there's another lone grave in the woods, abour 150 yards from the cemetery, with no marker. It is that of a young boy who died in the winter when "travel" out was difficult.
The Smith cemetery is on Frost property.

MACLEAN CEMETERY
This cemetery is on two levels: The newer section is close to the Sydney-Port Hawkesbury Highway, adjacent to the Legion; The old section is below it and to the left and that part is in bad shape. Some of the oldest stones are in the woods and are obscured by standing timber, undergrowth, and windfalls [An attempt should be made to clear this old area and save the stones.] A new section has been started just in front of the wooden section. It is of recent origin and still in use.
The oldest burial is that of Flora MacLean who died in 1825.

[BERT MACINTOSH PROPERTY] CEMETERY
This is a Protestant cemetery.
This is a neglected cemetery separated from a cow pasture by an electric fence. The stones are scattered through a wooded area. Many trees would have to be cut down to give a semblance of a "cemetery" and it should be better fenced. It is not visible from the highway.
The earliest marked burial is 1831-the most recent, 1925. It is difficult to tell if there are unmarked graves, but there probably are. The cemetery is no longer in use.

This was a hard one to find (even Askilton is hard to find!) and we drove by it even though it is right beside the road. We were finally led to it by Mr. Davey MacPherson who also had some difficulty locating it. This is to explain why I never did get back to do a re-check. The cemetery is uncared for and is rapidly going back to forest. In very few years (perhaps even now) it will be completely hidden. The largest stone is down, but it is not broken, and may have inscription on the "down" side. The earliest marked burial was in 1890; the most recent in 1939.
