ANCESTRAL GENEALOGICAL NOTES
The name
Rymer is an occupational one meaning ‘rhymer’ or poet and became particularly
common in south-west Lancashire from an early period: in Formby and North Meols
its occurrence was frequent to an extraordinary degree: it has been noted, for
example that by 1666 the hearth tax returns show that ‘nearly half the
population of Birkdale were Rimmers’! ... This frequency led to nicknames being
added to the name to make identification possible. The spellings Rymer/Rimer/Rimmer
and Rimmer were all absolutely interchangeble and the variations are not to be
seen as significant in any way. As elsewhere in this work the surname has
usually been spelled according to the variation used in the source being quoted
...

The Parish of North Meols, Church of England,
Historically Centred around St. Cuthbert's Church in Churchtown,
Includes Churchtown, Crossens, Marshside and Banks
The
Parish of North Meols (which included Churchtown, Crossens, Marshside and Banks)
has had its history dated back to pre-conquest days. Known then as Otegrimeles,
it was held by Saxon Lords until the Norman Conquest. In between the sea and the
great Martin Mere, the narrow strip of arable land that consituted North Meols
passed on to William De Coudrey. The son of William De Coudrey, Robert, built
the first Manor House in the Parish, Meols Hall, but the area remained isolated
and thus was very slow developing. The cluster of cottages around the Church
became known as Churchtown and was for many centuries the most populated area in
North Meols.
