- Island
Battery
-
It was claimed by the
English who attacked the Island Battery in 1745 that the
French regarded it as the palladium of Louisbourg. No
doubt what was meant, in naval speak, was that it was
regarded as the defensive bulwark of its inner harbour.
Twice attacked, twice silenced, loved or hated, it
represented in a startling microcosm all that Louisbourg
itself as a military might was and was not. Here too
loomed the battle between what was built and what was
proposed. What was built was battered twice and finally
knocked down beyond any use. What was proposed would
have met the same fate - argumentatively just as quickly
- though at a far greater financial cost.

Monuments
-
Over the course of its long
history there have been a number of monuments erected at
historic Louisbourg. The partial
reconstruction of the 18th-century fortified town,
beginning in the 1960s, is the most spectacular monument
to a period in history, but there were other
commemorations, which can still be seen during a visit
to the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site.

- Louisbourg 2013
-
The 300th anniversary of the founding
of Louisbourg.
-
The French came to Louisbourg in 1713, at
the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, when they
had to surrender title to their holdings in Newfoundland
and on mainland Nova Scotia. Initially Louisbourg was a
base from which the French exploited North America's
lucrative cod fishery. In 1745, after three decades of
peace and prosperity, a combined British and New England
force attacked and captured Louisbourg. An occupying
army took over the town, and its residents were removed
to France. Three years later Britain returned Cape
Breton to France through a treaty. In 1758 Britain took
Louisbourg a second time, and in 1760 demolished much of
the fortifications.

- Between 1713 and 1758, parish
priests maintained records of the religious ceremonies they
performed; their records being very similar to those of
modern day. These records document events such as the
births, marriages, and deaths of the people of the Fortress
of Louisbourg. They are organized primarily by the type of
ceremony; and secondly, by year.

The
