Tennis in Sydney
The people of Sydney are hospitable, their social life is genial, and throughout the year dances, at homes, boating, tennis or skating parties, are taking place. The town has a number of clubs. The Sydney Club was founded in 1871, and numbers amongst its members many of the leading professional and business men of the community. The Cape Breton Club, founded in 1899, has since been merged into the Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club, which draws its membership both from the officials of the Steel Company and the leading citizens generally. The various fraternal organizations, the Masons, the Foresters, the Oddfellows, and the Orangemen, all have strong lodges. The Italians have recently started a fraternal organization of their own, called in honor of their distinguished countryman, the Sebastian Cabot Society.
Sports and athletics are by no means neglected. The Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club is the only institution of the kind in the island. It owns a well appointed club-house, situated at the water's edge, and during the summer yacht races are held every Saturday afternoon. Among the yachts owned by the members of the club are the " Cibou," so called from the old Indian name of Sydney Harbor, the "Dominion," "Tiree," "Dione," "Giencairn I," "Glencairn IV," " Bebelle," " Colinet," " Gull " and " Grayling. " On a fine afternoon the beautiful harbor, studded with the white sails of the fleet, presents a charming sight. The Sydney Amateur Athletic Association, organized in 1900, is affiliated with the Maritime Provinces Association. The tennis club, the golf club, the curling club and numerous hockey clubs all afford opportunity for athletic exercises. The Rosslyn Rink was opened in 1899, when a reception was held for Sir Wilfred Laurier, the Premier of the Dominion. During the summer months Sydney Harbor is frequently visited by the ships of both the British and the French North Atlantic squadrons. At such times society events are especially numerous and brilliant ...[Charles William Vernon, Cape Breton, Canada, at the beginning of the twentieth century : a treatise of natural resources and development (Toronto: Nation Publishing Co.), p. 252]

Scott Robson, Curator, History Collection, Nova Scotia Museum looked in another source for info: "Post Cards of Cape Breton Island", by Ken C. MacDonald (printed by Scotia Stamp Studio, Halifax, about 1988). MacDonald dates all postcards published by Albert M. MacLeod as between 1906 and 1911. The tennis court image is on MacDonald's list for MacLeod's cards that were printed in Belgium, between 1906 and 1909.
Furthermore, according to Robson, the base photo was b&w, and a publisher might have presumed that the ground was grass even if not. The texture is not clear in the original postcard image.

The Tenth Annual Tournament of this Association [Nova Scotia Lawn Tennis Association - 1910] was held on the splendid courts of the Mayflower Lawn Tennis Club, New Glasgow, beginning August 1 to 6, 1910, and was equally as great a success in the number of competitors and proficiency of play as the tournament of 1909. Annie and Lucy have either just come in from playing tennis, or they are heading out to do so (I tend to think it’s the latter, since they’re both looking quite fresh). This photo must have been taken around 1914 as Margie (this is pronounced with a hard “g”) was born in 1909 and looks to be around five or six in this photo ...

Tennis
Lawn Tennis still lags behind that of Great Britain or the United States. Clubs exist in most of the principal towns and cities, but there is not much general enthusiasm about the game. An annual tournament is held under the auspices of the Canada Lawn Tennis Association; and the 'Queen's Tournament', which takes place in Aug. at Niagara-on-the-Lake (p. 226), also attracts many competitors.

Leslie Eaton was an active sportsman from his school days in the 1890s through the 1920s and beyond ... During the 1920s he was ranked among the top ten men’s singles tennis players in Nova Scotia. In 1923, he lost in the men’s finals to C.H. Mercer of Halifax, though the Acadian Recorder noted: “in the third set Dr Eaton, although the older of the two players, seemed to have better staying qualities....” He regularly figured in late round tennis matches through the 1920s both in singles and doubles. CITY TENNIS CLUB
Saturday, August 30, 1924
On Saturday last the City Tennis Club did not boast of as
large a crowd as it usually does,
which was no doubt due to so many people being out of town for the week end and
the holiday on Monday.
Those who were there however, enjoyed fully the fine afternoon and the splendid
condition of the courts
and the tea served by the hostesses was delicious.
The ladies in charge were Mrs. J K. McLeod, Miss C. Worgan, Miss H. Curren, and
Miss H. Johnstone.

1930's
[Or Late 20's]
This
is a picture taken during a break in a tennis
match dated c. late 1920s.
The
picture is a series of 4 photographs placed
together. No longer
grass, the courts have changed to clay.
Notable features, besides that of the players themselves, are the numerous straw boaters - a traditional hat for tennis matches of the period - the variety of ladies summer hats, boys wool caps, and a number of vehicles, including, perhaps two Ford Model T's (1908-1928), one with its roof clearly raised into position. The 4-door limousine with the spare on the fender and distinctive door handle locations is reminiscent of at least 5 vehicle types: Phianna (1916-1921), Packard (1920 Model 3-35 Twin-Six Sedan), Pierce Arrow (1921 Model 32 Vestibule Sedan), Lincoln (1922-1928 Limousine), and the Franklin (1924 Model C and 1926 Model A Sedan).
Most, if not all, of the houses still exist today.
This picture is very large, so we have two versions. The smaller version is 98KB, and the larger version is 410KB. Both pictures are the same physical size but the larger version has a sharper image. The larger version will require more time to download.
We obtained a copy of this picture from the Northside Historical Society.

So many crack tennis players are now stationed at Halifax
that the Nova Scotia Lawn Tennis Association

staged at Halifax,
indications are that a large number from the Capital would travel to the coast
