MOUNTAIN RESORT HOTEL OPENS The arrival of Their Excellencies, Baron and Lady Byng of Vimy, signalized the official opening of Jasper Park Lodge for the summer season of 1926. It was an opening completely devoid of ceremony. Upon their arrival the party was welcomed by A.S. McLean, general superintendent of Canadian National Railway Hotels, and John O’Brien, manager of the Lodge, both old friends of the governor-general. His Excellency and party proceeded immediately to the golf course while Lady Byng and her lady in waiting, Miss E.A. Sanford, spent the morning picnicking beside the Glacier of the Angel on Mount Edith Cavell, joining the others on the golf course for tea in the afternoon. All records for the number of guests present on opening day were broken this year. There were visitors at the lodge last week from Belfast, Ireland, New York city, California, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Chicago and Vermont, as well as from various cities in Western Canada. This is indicative of the volume of tourists who will visit the park this summer. Already indications are that it will be the heaviest season ever experienced and the additional sleeping rooms now bringing sleeping accommodation to 450 will be filled during July and August.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS In the early part of the 20th Century, men played in jackets and ties and women in long dresses or skirts that modestly hid feminine assets as golfers conformed to society’s norms of that era. Carter gets a reminder of golf styles in the early 1900s every time he walks into his office. “I’ve got a picture that’s behind my desk of an exhibition match that took place with the first head professional here, Jimmy Rimmer,” he said of a photo taken in 1927.
“He’s wearing wool plus fours with the typical argyle type socks. He’s got a cardigan sweater on with a tie and probably a long-sleeved shirt on underneath because the guy beside him was wearing a vest with a long-sleeved shirt.” ...

JAMES R1MMER, pro at Jasper Park in Canada, played some good and bad golf at the Los Angeles open but when he was good, he was very, very good as witnessed by an incoming nine holes of 31 in the third round.
The Canadian had used 39 strokes to negotiate the first half of the journey and any odds could have been posed against a par 70 for him as he stood on the tenth tee.
A man in the gallery had played with Rimmer on his home course and there was much interest as he told how bears are part of the golf scenery at Jasper Park.
"Why, when Rimmer wants to give a lesson," he said, "he has
to send out a couple of caddies with barrel staves to chase the bears off
the practice tee. And they are not little bears
either.
"I was playing a round of golf with him once and as I came up to my ball about 15 feet from the edge of the fairway a big brown bear came out of the woods and stopped a few feet away, evidently waiting for me to shoot
"It was the first bear I had ever seen on a golf course and 1 didn't know just what to do.
