Preface

The purpose of this narrative is to give the reader a broad overview of the events that shaped the lives of the inhabitants of Louisbourg in the summer of 1744. In writing it I attempted from time to time to suggest in a general way what people's thoughts and feelings might have been at different points during the summer. Obviously such speculation cannot be applied with, certainty to specific persons; the most that can be expected is a rough approximation of prevailing attitudes. It should be clear that individual reactions to the same event varied considerably and that as time passed and circumstances changed, the things about which people were concerned altered accordingly.
