Not sure if I played this year.
If I did, I would have had to play on a Pee Wee Team given my age (my 2nd Cousin, John Kornelsen, born the same month and year as I - January, 1943 - was a Pee Wee that year)

For sure, at this time I was playing pond hockey on the marsh at Point Pelee with my cousins and friends.

Originally the Flyers were a part of the Border Cities Junior "B" league from 1958 until 1964.

We, on your 1961-62 Junior Hockey Executive, feel we will have an exciting team with Eric Mackenzie as our
coach, and Fred Epplett as our manager. We list the following boys who are currently trying out with our team and who
are all from our Sun Parlour District. From this list, we feel an interesting club will be formed, and we leave this to you,
the Hockey Fans, to be the judge at our opening game, Thursday, 8:15 p.m. sharp, with gala opening ceremonies at 7:45.

"However the boys gave a good account of themselves before the 400 hometown fans as they proved that this is one of the best teams to wear the Flyer sweaters ... The game was wide open featuring a lot of loose play, penalties, and fine goaltending. Eric Krause, rookie goaltender for the flyers, played an excellent game between the pipes and kept the flyers in the game on many occasions .... shot hit Krause on the pads and bounced high in the air. The puck landed behind Eric and before he could grab it, it skidded into the goal ... However, moments later , Eric Krause spoiled a near perfect night in the nets for himself when he let Larry Davenport's lazy drive from twenty feet out dribble in ... On the play, Davenport was in front of of the net covered by a Flyer defense man with a Maroon cruising in on the left side. Instead of passing to the onrushing forward Davenport chose to shoot and although the shot was weak, Krause was fooled completely ....In the game ... Krause at the other end blocked 27 ..."

In the game Krause was called upon to stop 28 drives ... The Dresden defence covered up on the mistakes their team made but at the end the Flyer defence kept Krause in hot water on each side ... when a shot screened by a Leamington defender beat Krause ... blasted a shot by Krause ... Jim Banyai closed the gap to 6-5 at 10:48, however the Flyers never got any closer ...."

Fred Epplett, Former Leamington Flyers’ Owner Passes – by C. Scott Holland

He held a passion, a fire and lifelong enjoyment of the game of hockey but on Sunday, November 29, Fred Epplett, second owner of the Leamington Flyers hockey club, passed away.

The original club began in 1950 and by the late 50s the club struggled to obtain players and fans. In the conclusion of the 1959/60 season, original founder and owner Bill Burgess put the club up for sale. A young entrepreneur whose business was based in Leamington decided to purchase the club.

That fellow was Fred Epplett, one of the area’s most down-to-earth citizens.

His International Trucks Ltd. business grew under his guidance and ownership in much the same way as he helped transform the Leamington Flyers. But most of all, his beloved Flyers hockey team would become a highly competitive group of young men who sought to learn how to play the game, develop their talents and learned valuable lessons in life.

Epplett succeeded in hiring some of the best coaches around and after the Border Cities Hockey loop disbanded in 1963, he entered the Flyers in the OHA Juvenile ranks. For three consecutive seasons the Flyers went to the All-Ontario finals winning the provincial title once. Two future NHLers came out of those teams – Brad Selwood and Randy Manery ...
