SLOW-PITCH
Team Cod Splitter
Eric Krause
Cod Splitter Slow-Pitch Ball Player - Fortress of Louisbourg - 1979-1991
1979: A first small Fortress of Louisbourg employee driven tournament that included a Town of Louisbourg Team
1980: First all Parks Canada Tournament - each civic holiday weekend in August - under the leadership of the Fortress of Louisbourg Recreation Association (Eric Krause, FLRA Chairman - Society Registered: 1980-06-06. Society Defaulted: 1996-06-30)
The Cod Splitter team also entered many tournaments on the Fortress side of the island, including participating in the annual Bateson Tournament. One team we played against wore rubber boots; one outfielder player had only one throwing arm and was a remarkable athlete, catching the ball, tossing the ball in the air, throwing off his glove, catching it with his free hand and then firing the ball back; one outfield was nothing but dirt and rocks, making for unexpected bounces; etc.
Friday Night of the Tournament always featured an Ice Breaker at the Guest House, with free beer, out of a boat, and a BBQ or meal of some type (Jon Lawrence organized a number of these)
A shout out to the umpires behind the plate who volunteered their time each August tournament and ensured that each game ran smoothly. Ross MacLean, Lawrence MacDonald, Percy Shepherd, Scott MacDonald, and Glen Shepherd were some of them. Others, I believe, were a Billard, a Perry, and a Murrey. There were even more, perhaps like a Gus ?.

A J B Johnston, Writer ...Fast forward to me working as a
historian at the Fortress of Louisbourg, beginning in 1977. At some point in
the years that followed a bunch of us began to play ball over lunch hour in
the summertime.
One day, Fortress archivist Eric Krause had a big idea: he would organize a
ball tournament to be held on the long weekend in August for Parks Canada
employees, lots of Parks employees across the entire Atlantic Region. The
event was a huge success, for many years. People came to Louisbourg to play
ball, eat crab and all that fun stuff. The tournament was a highlight of the
summer.
Yes, it was slow-pitch not baseball. But nonetheless it was still great to
be playing the game again, this time as one of the Cod Splitters, as our
team was called. We even won the Atlantic championship one year. That was
fun. .....

BROOMBALL (c. 1970-1971)
Broomball was relatively popular in Ottawa, Ontario when I arrived there in 1968. While employed with Parks Canada, one winter (c. 1970-1971) we fielded a team. Naturally, I assumed goal-tending duties.
