Eleven teams to compete in two-day event at Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex

SYDNEY — The group behind the proposed Cromarty Community Indoor Tennis Centre is hosting a weekend tournament with the hopes of highlighting the need for an off-season facility.

The second annual CCITC National Living Healthy Senior Age Invitational Team Tennis Doubles Tournament will be played Saturday and Sunday at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex dome. Unlike last year’s inaugural event, this year’s tournament will be held indoors on the artificial turf.

Organizer and CCITC chair Eric Krause said an indoor tennis program was held at the multi-purpose dome last winter and had a positive turnout.

“It’s a different surface,” he said. “Last year, we had winter tennis here all year and it took a bit for players to get used to the surface. It’s a different bounce and a different game.

“It’ll actually even it out a bit more. It’ll take a bit away from the big servers and give a little bit to the faster runners. It’s not a hard court. It’s pretty soft. It’s like a slow grass.”

Four indoor nets will be set up for this year’s event. It will be the first one sanctioned by Tennis Nova Scotia.

Along with tournament play, children’s clinics will also be held this weekend. Krause said he has about 50 kids registered, up from 30 last year.

“The main group right now that’s supporting indoor is retirees,” he said. “What we have to get is the younger crowd. Retirees can go any time from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the younger groups, ages 4-6, there weren’t enough children that we could put into a program to justify the health complex giving us those solid hours. This is what we’re trying to convince them with.”

The tournament will feature a double round-robin tournament in the senior men’s division. Defending champions Bill Buckland of Sydney and Norman Ross of Sydney Mines are looking for back-to-back titles.

The senior women will play a single round robin. Claire Rogers of Blacketts Lake teamed up Helen Xia of Sydney River last year to win the division. Rogers is back this year with new teammate Kathy MacIntyre of Westmount.

“Originally, it was geared to seniors, but they’ve opened it up to 40-and-older just to get out and be active,” said Rogers. “Tennis is a wonderful sport for that you can play it a long time. I’m sure that some of those players will be in their 70s who could be playing.”

An under-25 division will include three teams taking part, and will include Cromarty instructor Kevin Hall among other participants.

Competition will follow children’s clinics starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Teams begin at 11 a.m. and wrap up with the final matches at 3:30 p.m. each day.
