NEWSLETTER OF OCTOBER 2012

2013 55+ TOURNAMENT

SYDNEY, CAPE BRETON ISLAND

October 15, 2012

The Cromarty Community Indoor Tennis Centre (CCITC) is exploring the possibility of involving the Canada 55+ organization and its associations in a follow-up major Tennis tournament in 2013 (an off-year for your events) at a number of tennis venues in the vicinity of the outdoor Cromarty courts which would again act as the host organization with the CCITC the organizing body. The dates in question would centre upon the Labour Day week-end in September (Labour day in 2013 would be September 2), with games extended before and after that date as required.

First thoughts:

The CCITC is looking at a round robin tournament (total points), doubles format (women's, men's, mixed), provincially based-teams (multiple teams from a province are encouraged), with each team consisting of 2 or more players. Teams may rotate players in or out of games or matches as required to meet their individual physical strengths, limitations, or age considerations.

2012 tennis categories were 55+, 65+ and 75+ but we are open to practical changes depending on the final team compositions, given that 55 would be the minimum age of any player as of our tournament date.

This is a serious proposal since our goal is to produce a successful tournament, bring in economic dollars, and convince government and sponsors to support the construction of the first indoor tennis centre here on Cape Breton.

CROMARTY COMMUNITY INDOOR TENNIS CENTRE (CCITC)
A Public Hub Facility Serving The Entire CBRM

The Cromarty Community Indoor Tennis Centre (CCITC), a tax-exempt Sydney-based charitable organization has begun its donation drive to build the first indoor facility in Cape Breton designed exclusively for the game of tennis. A public facility available on a first come, first served basis, the Centre will also advance education by providing tennis lessons to students as a component of a school curriculum, and by offering training courses for tennis coaches, officials and instructors. It will also relieve conditions associated with aging by providing tennis programs for the aged; and it will afford relief to persons with disabilities by developing and implementing tennis programmes for the disabled.

Cecil Clarke, Mayor

Hello Cecil:

Congratulations on your election as Mayor.

Kevin MacNeil and I  thank you for taking time with both of us at Tims today and listening with interest to our desire since 2006 to build the first indoor facility in the CBRM dedicated to the game of tennis. You invited me to send you a note outlining in more detail our plans. Please visit our site at www.cromartytennis.ca/ccitc where all is revealed. Please note too that the Cromarty Community Indoor Tennis Centre (CCITC) is a charity registered with the Federal Government.

Manning MacDonald also has mentioned that he would like to visit the clubhouse of the outdoor Cromarty Tennis Club, and I invite you to join him at your convenience where we can reminiscence with him about the major contribution that he provided in 1996 in upgrading its outdoor facilities. The retiree group, beginning October 27, will have players there every week-day and week-end until the snow flies, and even after, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM. Each of us would be more than pleased to see you come and visit us. We can even provide a racquet if you would like to join in.

Finally, I am sure you are aware of the very successful Canada 55+ Tennis tournament which was recently held (August 29-September 1, 2012) in Sydney. With its success in mind, on October 15, 2012, the CCITC sent a note to the Headquarters of Canada 55+ with a proposal that they alert its Provincial Associations that the CCITC is exploring the possibility of involving the Canada 55+ organization and its associations in a major follow-up Tennis tournament next year (an off-year for their events). Play would took place at a number of outdoor tennis venues in the CBRM  with the outdoor Cromarty Tennis Club acting as the host organization and the indoor CCITC as the organizing body. The dates in question would centre upon the Labour Day week-end in September (Labour day in 2013 would be September 2), with games extended before and after that date as required.

And most encouraging ---- On the same date, October 15, 2012, the CCITC received a positive response, with the President of Canada 55+ further stating that he has now alerted all of its associations of our proposal. We are now awaiting replies.

Cecil, this is a serious proposal that we are making since our goal is to produce a successful tournament, bring in economic dollars, and convince government and sponsors to support the construction of the first designed-for indoor tennis facility here on Cape Breton. With your support and that of this new council (of interest, previously, the Public Services Committee endorsed our building project on January 29, 2009, and another endorsement re a tournament would, of course, prove helpful when I can confirm it is on) I am sure that we can not only pull this off in 2013 with ease, given our expertise, but also make it an annual tournament and economic driver every Labour Day week-end thereafter.

If you are interested in seeing what happened, with photos, during the Canada 55+  Tennis tournament, please visit the website of the Cromarty outdoor tennis club at: http://www.cromartytennis.ca/Canada55TennisSydney.htm

If you are interested in seeing retirees on the outdoor courts during the winter, with snow all around, and a record number of days played, perhaps visit the year 2010 at http://www.cromartytennis.ca/Retirees2010.htm

Thanks,

Eric
