To Sheriff of the County of Halifax Greeting We Command you to attach the Goods Chattles or the Estate of Samuel Sparrow of Halifax Merchant ... to the value of forty pound ... to appear before our Justices of our Supreme Court ... Halifax on the second Tuesday of October next ... and there to answer the Suit of Joseph Gravois of Halifax mariner ... to the damage of the said Joseph ... the sum of Eighty Pounds ... this twenty Second Day of July in the twenty third Year of our Reign ... 1783

[20b - Back] Halifax Septebre 6th 1783 ... By virtue of this Writ I did attach a house in [blank] Street now occupied by Mr Rundel shewn me as the property of the Defendent and at the same time served the Defendents Agent with a copy of this Writ September 6th 1783 ... Sheriff ...

Joseph Gravois the Plantiff in this Cause Deposes and Says that the Sum of Forty pound Pounds is Honestly due this Dept By Samuel Sparrow the Defendant Being for Mariners Wages Due to Him No part of Which Said Sum this Dept has yet Received .... Sworn ... the 6th 1783 ... [signed] Jos Gravois ...

Gerald Fitz-Gerald attorney for the Defendant Maketh oath and saith that at the time the plaintif Commenced this Action the Defendant was absent from this Province, that the defendant's House, of large value, has been Attached to answer the plaintiffs Suit, and Stands as a pledge ... the Defendant's arrival in this province which is shortly expected ... 15th day of April 1784 ...
