last Will and testament of Samuel Sparrow,
late of South Carolina in the United States of America.
South Carolina July 7th: 1799. SAMUEL SPARROW |
My Chief motive for writing this, I am much = = Distressed and fearful of Treachery: However, I must = trust to providence I find the yellow fever prevailing and may prove fatal. I leave at my death all my = property to my Wife Sarah Sparrow # Saml Sparrow 28th Decr : 1803 On which day appeared personally Broome Phillips Witts of Friday Street in the = = = Parish of Saint Margaret Moses London Gentleman and Thomas Russell of London Road in the Parish of St Georges Southwark in the County of Surry ﮚ Gentleman, and jointly and severally made Oath = that they knew and were well acquainted with Samuel Sparrow formerly of South Lambert in the County of Surry and late of Shadds Place Peckham in the Parish of St Giles Camberwell in the same County but in America deceased for many Years before and to the time of his death and during such times I have = = frequently seen him write and write and subscribe his name to writing and are Hereby become well acquainted with his Manner and character of hand writing and Subscription and having now carefully viewed and inspected the paper writing hereunto annexed purporting to be the last will and Testament of the said Deceased the said will being in the Words following "to Wit, South Carolina Being July 7th : 1799 my Chief Motive "for Writing this I am much Distressed and fearful of "treachery However I must trust to providence. I = " find the yellow Fever prevailing and may prove fatal. I leave at my death all my property to my wife Sarah Sparrow" and thus Subscribed "Samuel Sparrow" These Deponents say they verily and in their consciences believe the whole body Series and Contents of the Said Will and the named Samuel Sparrow" = Subscribed Hereto as aforesaid To be of the proper handwriting and subscription of the said Samuel Sparrow the Testator deceased # Broome P. On the Seventh Day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and four Admin with the Will annexed of all and Singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of Samuel Sparrow formerly of Peckham in the County of Surrey, afterwards belonging to the = Merchant Ship Industry but late of Charlestown in = South Carolina deceased was granted to Sarah = Acres former Sparrow wife of John Edwards Acres the relict and universal Legatee named in the said will having been first sworn duty to administer the Letters & administration of the Goods of the said Deceased granted in the month of February 1801 to Elizabeth Stansbury widow the = = = Natural and lawful Sister and one of the next of kin of the said Sarah Acres under a suggestion that the said deceased had died Intestate having been first ﮚ voluntarily brot [brought] in and revoked as by acts of ﮚ ﮚ ﮚ court appears ~ |
On the Eighth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand and eight hundred and four Administration with the Will annexed of all and Singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of Samuel Sparrow formerly of Peckham in the County of Surry, afterwards ﮚ ﮚ belonging to the Merchant Ship Industry but lately of Charlestown in South Carolina deceased = left and administered by Sara Acres formerly Sparrow deceased whilst living the relict and universal Legat[ee] named in the will was granted to John Edward Acres the husband and Administrator of the Goods of the said Sarah Acres formerly Sparrow having been first = = sworn Duty to Administer His Executor being named in the said will The Letters & Administration of all and Singular the Goods Chattels & ic = said deceased ﮚ granted in the month of February 1801 to Elizabeth Stansbury widow the Sister and one of the next of Kin of the said Deceased upon the remuneration of the said Sarah Acres under a Suggestion that the Deceased had died Intestate, having been first voluntarily brought in and revoked as by Acts of court appears |

"The Prerogative Court of Canterbury ... was the most senior of the pre 1858
ecclesiastical courts and had jurisdiction over all of England and Wales. The
wills of those who died abroad were usually proved here ...The PCC was the most
important of these courts dealing with relatively wealthy individuals living
mainly in the south of England and most of Wales ..."
