MARCH 9, 1790
[JUNE 17, 1788?]
[p. 20]
... Being ordered to appear before the Governor in Council respecting some lots of Sydney belonging to the Revd. Mr. Cossit and a Mr. Sparrow whose Agent I was, and being informed that Govr. Macarmick had altered the original design of the Town, & intended to block up the Street along Mr. Sparrows lots, by laying it not into Lots, I observed how considerably this would reduce the Value of Mr. Sparrows property who had been two years in possession and had laid not a Considerable Sum in fences and improvements; the Govr. replied he wanted [his] advice. Mr. Cuyler being present, claimed a prior right to Mr. Sparrow & to the Revd. Mr. Cossit, although he had actually the returns of Survey in his own Office for the purpose of making not the grants accordingly. To explain how groundless Mr. Culyer's Claim was, I produced Copies of Mr. Cossit's Letters to Mr. Cuyler in Mr. Cossit's hand writing, Mr. Cuyler [p. 21] Cuyler denied having received the Originals and used very unbecoming & indecent language towards Mr. Cossit Firstly: Lieut Col. Graham, who then was of the Council [on council October 22, 1787-December 16, 1788], second [?] Mr. Cuyler in scurrilation And added that the letters were forged; But Mr. Mathewa was obliged to declare he had seen [them] in the hands of Mr. Cossit.
