(122) VIDE: Letter from Mr. Monk (employed to defend sundry Suits instituted in Nova Scotia, against DesBarres, for Supplies for the Public Service in Cape Breton), dated Halifax 13th January, 1788 (App. C 516) viz.
"Mr. Sparrow has Attachments upon your Estates in this Province, to the Amount of Four thousand and forty one Pounds, for your Bills returned protected. Mr. Sparrow has employed Mr. Blowers and, in case I find occasion, I shall take the Assistance of Mr. Sterns who was with me in the Defence upon Denison's Attempt against you, and is now with me to defend the Action against you by Jodrit. I lament that your Menaudie Tenants have not Advisors more truly attached to your Interest, than those who dissuade them from giving a Power to wrest from the Hands of the Sheriff their Stock now under Attachment for Jodrit's Demand against you. I fear how much this may break upon your Arrangement and Expectations from those Settlements, as it may tend to the Loss of your Settlers, either by Forfeiture of their Leases, or their Inability to continue their Improvements, if their qualified Property in the Stock is not unquestionably acknowledged secure from Demands against their Landlord; besides the Danger of creating a Dispute between you and them in the Sequel. We shall endeavour to keep Jodrit's Suit undecided till you have time to give such Directions as you may with should govern our Proceedings in the Business, which will be soon desired, as some time has elapsed since the Suit was commenced. A Letter from Tatmagouche informs that Mr. Tremaine, for himself and others, have attached your Estate there for the Amount of Two Thousand Pounds.
