ANCESTRAL GENEALOGICAL NOTES
STORY abt. Justina Groening. She was a widow Enns when she married Peter J. Dueck.
The Mennonite church split into Grosse and Kleine Gemeinde (Large and Small congregation).
The Kleine (Small) congregation thought the church was getting too worldly and had separated from the Grosse (Large) congregation around 1812 - 1815.
Justina's relatives, the Groenings and Baltzers, were Kleine (Small). When Justina married her first husband Herman Enns they too were Kleine (Small). All the Enns' who were Kleine gemeinde left for America in the 1870s. They farmed the original Groening Wirtschaft #16 in Halbstadt. After her first husband Herman Enns died in 1855 Justina remarried.
Justina Groening/Enns was a widow with 5 young Enns children under 14 years of age. She had a full farm to look after and it must have been quite a prosperous one. From all accounts, by the 1850s, there were families that could afford the luxury of hiring farm labourers, housemaids, coachmen, etc. A year after becoming a widow, on Feb. 16, 1856, she married Peter Johann Dueck. Peter was one of her hired men and 10 years younger than she and the church had a problem with that.
An old diary written by a Kleine Gemeinde minister states that he visited widow Enns on January 4, 1856 in Halbstadt and counseled her that she would live in sin if she married the young worker and that she would not be welcome in their church. Peter was 23 and she was 33 when they married.
P.S. Through this Justina Groening you [Eric] are a 5th cousin to Matt Groening of The Simpsons!!!! [Note: or a 4th Cousin, once removed]

Johann Regier 1802-42.
Oberschulze (Vorsteher) Johann Regier was the son of Catharina Epp (b. 1764) and Johann “Hans” Regier (b. 1759) who settled in Kronsgarten near Ekaterinoslav shortly after 1800. Catharina was the daughter of Peter Epp (1725-89), renown Ältester of the Danziger Old Flemish Gemeinde who spearheaded the immigration to Russia in the 1780s. Another daughter Aganetha Regier (1793-1863) married Johann Klassen (1785-1841), Tiegerweide (originally Tiege), who served as Oberschulze of the Molotschna Colony from 1827-33. Aganetha and Johann Klassen had a daughter Aganetha married to David A. Friesen (1807-93), Halbstadt, Oberschulze of the Molotschna from 1848-65. Son Abraham Klassen (1828-1906) was a Kleine Gemeinde minister and eventually settled in Alexanderfeld, Ks. His descendants include Matt Groening, founder of the TV show “The Simpsons”. Catharina Epp and Johann Regier had another daughter Katharina married to Martin J. Barkman (1796-1872), Rückenau. Their son Jakob (1824- 75) was a Kleine Gemeinde minister who drowned in the Red River in 1875.
Johann Regier (1802-42) lived in Schönsee. He served as Oberschulze or district mayor of the Molotschna from 1833-41 succeeding his brother-in- law Klassen. Dr. James Urry has written: “...Johann Regier....even according to his opponents, was a competent administrator. Assisted by the district secretary appointed by the government, Regier was a keen supporter of the Agricultural Union as Cornies expanded its activities. But Regier had a dreadful weakness: he drank to excess. As his drinking problems increased he was called before his congregation and forced to repent his ways. Repentance, however, did not result in increased sobriety, and Warkentin, obviously faced with a dilemma if Regier was banned by his congregation yet remained district mayor, appealed to the other elders to assist him in a complaint to the Guardian’s Committee which might result in Regier’s removal. The other [pietistic] elders, no doubt suspicious of Warkentin’s motives, refused to support such a move. They pointed out that the affairs of the District Office were all in order and that Regier’s drinking did not interfere with his fulfilling the duties of office,” (Urry, 127-128).
In spite of strong opposition Regier was elected for a third term in 1838. For the next term starting in 1842, Jakob Warkentin put up his own candidate for Oberschulze, namely, Peter Toews, of Tiege. In spite of his successful election Johann Regier continued to carry out the duties of Oberschulze even though his term had expired. Another election was ordered but Regier died before it was completed with the result that Peter Toews was elected with 800 votes (see Golden Years, 285). Historian Henry Schapansky has speculated whether Johann Regier may also have been a pietist which would help explain why Cornies defended him so loyally: “His daughter and the Defehr relatives were among the first Brüdergemeinders.”

Homer Simpson has Canadian Mennonite roots
First comes the news that the irreverent, beer-guzzling, dough- nut-chomping cartoon character Homer Simpson is Canadian.
Now it turns out he’s got Mennonite roots as well. “The Simpsons” is a popular television show created by Matt Groening. In a front-page article in the August 23 Regina Leader-Post, Scott Foster notes that Homer Simpson is named after Matt’s father, Homer Groening, who was born to Mennonite parents in Main Centre, Saskatchewan, in 1919.
Matt’s great-grandfather had moved to the area from the United States in 1908 to homestead. Most of the family, except an Uncle Frank who married a local woman, Agnes Cornelson, later returned to the U.S.
Asked about Homer Simpson’s ancestry at a comedy festival in Montreal this summer, Matt Groening said that since his Dad was born in Canada and Homer was named for him, “that would make Homer Simpson a Canadian.”
The revelation created a small buzz in the media.
“I hope Canadians won’t hold it against the show now that they know,” Groening said.
(A web check reveals that Great-Grandmother Groening was Aganetha Klassen, daughter of Kleine Gemeinde minister Abraham Klassen of Kansas.)
Although Matt Groening named the Simpsons’ characters after family members, he insists the personalities do not match. In fact, says reporter Foster, Homer Groening was the “antithesis” of the Simpson character. He was “a model citizen,“ active in the Boy Scout movement and later attending Linfield College, a Baptist school. He was a decorated war hero.
He was also filmmaker, cartoonist, and ad man who inspired his son Matt.
“He was a hard-working, complicated guy who had a lot of conflicting impulses,” Matt has said of the real-life Homer. “He was raised as a Mennonite, which is sort of like the Amish, and he spoke German until he went to school. He and I had a contentious relationship.”
To those Mennonites uncomfortable with the Simpson connections, Bart Simpson would probably say, “Don’t have a cow!” Main Centre oldtimers might shake their heads a little over both Homers—real and fictional—and mutter that it just goes to show what can happen when you let the boys off the farm.

Already a minister when he arrived in Rosenort, Rev. Klassen seemingly had many arguments with other leaders. Discontent with both the church and the countryside of southern Manitoba he packed his bags and moved to Alexanderfeld, Kansas. His leanings were toward baptism by immersion and later it seems he was rebaptized and became a KMB minister? His best known offspring is Matt Groening - creator of the Simpsons.

Interesting to read all the family trees, and to find out how we are all
related. Since I was adopted into the Klaassen-Longo family, and as an adult, I
have traced my roots on my Native/French/Scottish side back to the 1600's. In my
Metis family lineage, there is so much intermarriage going on...that in one
community in Duck Bay, Manitoba, everyone is related, not once, or twice, but
sometimes up to 10 times...(eg...second cousin, sibling, half second cousin,
married to third cousin once removed, fourth cousin, fifth half cousin
etc...very hard to document but kind of amusing)...similar to Mennonite family
tree that I have done in our Klaassen/Jantzen/Braun/Heinrichs/Klassen tree...

Hello,
Just found out that Matt Groening, the creator of the tv show THE SIMPSONS is my
third cousin! I knew that my adopted family of Mennonite heritage seems to be
related to every other Mennonite, it seems.
Matt's dad Homer Groening, and my Mom are second cousins. My Grandpa Daniel
Klaassen is first cousin to Matt's grandpa Abram A Groening. Matt's great
grandpa and grandma are Abraham Groening who married Aganetha Klaassen. Aganetha
Klaassen is the sister to my great grandpa P. A. Klaassen (or Peter A. Klaassen).
Their parents are Abraham Klaassen and Helena (nee Martens) Klaassen, who were
born in Russia.
Anyhow,
Later!

The Groenings, The Simpsons and The Mennonites
posted by Tim Nafziger on 08/16/07 at 12:03 PM
In honor of the recent release of The Simpsons Movie, I've invited Dale Suderman in as a guest blogger to share some little known history of the Simpsons.
"The Simpsons" is the best satire of contemporary American culture. For those interested in Mennonites involved in mass culture, it is also a case study of a family morphing from immigrant Mennonite experience to pop culture celebrity in four generations.
For two decades "The Simpsons" cartoon show on the Fox network has made people laugh and groan at the antics of the most dysfunctional—but ultimately loving-- family in America. Homer and Marj Simpson and their three children, Bart the brat, Lisa the child genius and Maggie the pacifier-sucking infant along with Grandpa Abraham live in the mythical city of Springfield.
The creative genius of the show, Matt Groening, has been coy about Springfield's location—even suggesting it might be Winnipeg, Manitoba since his father was born Canadian. He has alluded to the Mennonite and Germany language origins of his family. Matt Groening has recreated his own family tree in the names of his cartoon characters. Most obviously, his real life parents are Homer and Margaret Groening, and he does have a sister named Lisa.
The show is preoccupied with religious— and some might say also sacrilegious -- themes. From Reverend Lovejoy—of complex denominational identity to neighbor Ned Flanders—the born-again, Bible believing neighbor, Groening wrestles with complex issues of faith and meaning in all his characters.
When Bart's tree house burns down, the Amish show up for a barn raising. Marj says, "Oh, those Amish are so industrious, unlike those shiftless Mennonites and the scene shifts to "Mennonites" shooting dice and smoking cigarettes. In-jokes like this go over the heads of most viewers.
Reconstructing the genealogy of Matt Groening one finds a fascinating saga.
The story begins in the 1870s when Abraham Groening emigrated from the Ukraine and became a leading member of the Gnadenau Krimmer Mennonite Brethren church located southwest of Hillsboro in Marion County, Kansas. He was a school board member of a one-room school district and hired his 16-year-old son, Abram Abraham Groening—soon known as AA Groening-- to teach a room full of youngsters—most of them his siblings.
In 1908, AA Groening is among the first 39 students in the newly opened Tabor College meeting in the Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro. Seven years later he graduates and begins some graduate work at Kansas University and teaches part-time at his alma mater. He is what is known as a promising young lad.
But there is a shadow on the horizon. War fever is breaking out with the looming conflict with Germany. The Groenings speak both High German and the Plautdeutsch dialect. They are pacifists by religious conviction. A draft notice is sent to AA Groening.
Vigilante groups in Kansas are out to prove their patriotism and protect America by kicking some German pacifist's butt. One night, they pick Abraham Groening as a target. He gets wind of this and drives his family to his brother-in-law's house. John Siebert hides the car in the barn, the Groenings in the attic and tells his own family to keep quiet. The youngest child was told she nearly suffocated as her sister held her hand over her mouth to keep quiet. The vigilantes came on horseback with torches and guns, circling the house but not entering. Shortly thereafter, on September 18, 1918 the pater familias Abraham Groening had a quick farm sale and moved his family to Hepburn, Saskatchewan. Apparently they later relocated to Main Centre, Saskatchewan.
According to the Investigative Reports of the Bureau of Investigation, 1908-1922, roll # 705, an agent from the Bureau of Investigation—the predecessor of the FBI—came to Hillsboro looking for AA Groening. He interrogated John Siebert rather firmly. Siebert claims he does not speak the English so good, does not recall ever discussing religion or politics with Groening and says that Groening went to Canada because he thought farming would be easier near the Arctic Circle.
The draft-dodging AA Groening marries in Canada, begins a family and has a son named Homer. When the war is over he does more graduate work at the University of California and returns to Tabor College as a professor in 1920. By 1930 he is Dean of Tabor College and instrumental in starting the athletic department. His parents Abraham Groening have also returned to Hillsboro and retire there.
In 1930, AA Groening and family—including his ten-year-old son Homer move to Oregon where AA teaches at Albany College—later known as Lewis and Clark College.
Homer marries Margaret Wiggam. He has strong aesthetic interests and works in advertising but also makes films and writes poetry and cartoons. He fights in World War Two as a pilot—which probably produced some interesting conversations with his father.
Homer and Margaret have a son Matthew Abram Groening born in 1954. Matt remembers his father's encouragement for sketching and cartooning. Matt graduates from Evergreen College, gets a slacker job in a record store and begins selling his cartoons known as "Life in Hell" from the front counter. He gets an offer to do a cartoon series and the Simpsons begin. The pop icon names his son, Matthew Abram Groening—the fourth generation to use this biblical name.
In 1972, AA Groening returns to Tabor College to receive a distinguished alumni award. He and his wife walk through the old church building where he first took college classes.
In the 1980s Homer Groening returns to Hillsboro and takes assorted cousins and relatives to lunch at the old Iron Kettle Restaurant—the hangout of towns peoples and farmers. He thanks them for their kindness to his family.
This is an inter-generational saga. Abraham Groening is an immigrant from the Ukraine to central Kansas and part of the larger Mennonite migration. He is a leader in the Krimmer Mennonite Brethren Church—a group somewhat more conservative than even the pietist Mennonite Brethren. The faith that prompted him to relocate his family a second time to Canada to avoid the drafting of his sons into the military is complex and unknown. His son Abram Abraham Groening is equally complex and worthy of more research. Here is a man who goes from teaching in a one-room school at age sixteen to a doctorate in science with time at Kansas University, the University of California—probably Berkeley, and the University of Chicago. Somehow he is able to return to his Mennonite Brethren alma mater as faculty and even briefly as Dean without controversy. He moves on to Oregon and continues a distinguished career. His religious affiliation later in life is unknown.
Homer Groening bridges into the world of advertising, media and illustration. The fact that he is a WWII veteran must have produced some interesting dialogue with his father.
Matthew Abram Groening certainly knew the story of his family. While it is said that "Grandpa Abraham" was a mere coincidence presented by his scriptwriters, certainly Matt Groening has retained control of names used in the show.
How much of this is coincidence and merely the whimsy of a creative genius remains open to discussion. One suspects that a more careful examination of the life of AA Groening as the bridge figure would solve part of this puzzle.
A modified version of this article was published in the August 16, 2007 Hillsboro Free Press in the View from Afar column written by Dale Suderman.
