The White Ensign
By A Louisbourg Historian
White was the colour of the Bourbon's, symbolizing purity. As the flag of France's 18th century Minister of the Marine, the White Ensign was flown in all of France's overseas colonies. It signified that the one flying this flag was ready, willing and able to take on all enemies of France, in Battle. It is likely that it became synonymous with surrender because of the custom of the vanquished flying the victor's flag, since France had been a world power for hundreds of years, it is not surprising that the rest of the world would adopt her old flag as a symbol of surrender when France took the tri-couleur as her flag after the French Revolution in 1789.
