Myth
Busters at Work… In response to a question about whether the design of
the Frederic Gate had some Vietnamese influence or not, our famous
myth-buster, Anne Marie Lane-Jonah strikes again. Anne Marie writes:

The Frédéric Gate: French to its Foundations The pleasure of answering the tough questions never fades. Thus we find a fresh and informative memo from Yvon Leblanc, dated May 27, 1980. He is answering the question of whether the Frédéric Gate shows influence of Vietnamese design given that Verrier had been in Vietnam. Yvon guessed that the more than usually curved “coyau” (eaves) were the source of this speculation. He replied that there all of the elements in the design of the gate are typical of classical French architecture. The unusual feature of this gate is that it is built of wood, as our records show clearly, rather than of stone. |
