Foreword ~ MG 21
The Public Archives of Canada over the years has made transcripts of parts of various series in the British Museum which relate to Canadian history. These are found in Manuscript Group 21 at the PAC.
During the summers of 1963 and 1964 a few of these series were selected and indexed for the Louisbourg Restoration at the Public Archives of Canada. With the beginning of the work in London it was decided to consult the original manuscripts in the British Museum rather than continue working from the transcripts in Ottawa which were not considered reliable enough for the scope of their selection of what was Canadian. As a result there are a few selections from series on transcript at the Public Archives of Canada which are of interest to the project but which have not been indexed.
When consulting the index cards for these series the Public Archives of Canada Preliminary Inventory for Manuscript Group 21 should be consulted. A description of the series as a whole will be found in this Preliminary Inventory.
Index cards for this Manuscript Group are not to be taken from the Louisbourg Archives. There are no transcripts or microfilm for any of this material in the Louisbourg Archives.
The index cards for the Haldimand papers were made in 1964 and these reproduce verbatim the information relating to Louisbourg. The index cards for all other series were made in 1963 and generally these are a précis of the documents, unless in quotes. If in quotes, the information is reproduced verbatim from the original.
