There are no documentary
references to sod buildings as such, although sod was a common roofing material. However,
plans 731-1 and 731-3 (see the illustrations for piquet construction) illustrate several
sod buildings, which, from their location, served as échaffauds or fish houses. There
buildings built on jetties as illustrated, would have been subject to damage by storms,
tides, and ice, and probably required constant repairs. The documents do not indicate what
material was used in the construction of échaffauds, and more research will be required
to determine the exact nature of sod buildings.
