APPENDIX A
A preliminary search indicates that the following minutes include specific discussions of palisades and fences, with respect to construction, dimensions, and finishes.
SUMMARY OF MINUTE
DISCUSSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
1. 8 April 1968 - Kings Bastion - Interior Place of Arms, etc.
- 4-6" diameter posts
- 10" O/C with ribband on the inside face
2. 15 May 1968 - King's Bastion - Interior Place of Arms, etc.
- historical evidence in memorandum dated 30 April 1968
- ribbon height 15" below earth embankment
3. 24 May 1968 (Addendum) - King's Bastion - Interior Place of Arms
- design of palisade shall be based on Mr. Bureau's findings
- palisades not to be taken down to 3 pieds depth since they would have rested on the terreplein
- spacing between adjacent palisades to be worked out later
- triangle-shaped ribbons to be made out of "square" timber, hewn on the four sides and sawn diagonally
4. 12 December 1968 - King's Bastion - Interior Place of Arms
- spruce
- debarked
- treated with a preservative
- 6' 11' in length
- 4 1/4" - 6 3/8" in diameter
- pointed at one end: point to run approximately 1' - 0"
- 8 O/C (which will provide a separation of 2" or more from each other)
- triangular ribbon:
- made from a 5 1/4" square piece of lumber 9' 4" in length
- hand-hewn on 4 sides
- cut diagonally to form the required triangular prism
- located 3" below the top of the wall elevation with
- point of triangle jutting up
- flat side embedded 1 1/8" into the palisade
- one nail through each palisade
- space blocker:
- 6" x 6" anchored to the wall at approximately 9' 4" intervals
- palisades embedded into the banquette to terreplein level
- palisades protrude approximately 12" above the crest of the glacis
- palisade built in sections, with a scarf joint and nailed to the space blocks
5. 23 December 1968 - King's Bastion - Interior Place of Arms
- palisades pointed by hand, with an axe, for a rough hand-hewn appearance
- separation between palisades: 2 inches minimum, 3 inches maximum
- section length of ribband: 15 pieds (16' 0") minimum
- hand made 6" long nails for attaching the ribband to the palisades
- hand-cut check for embedding the ribband in the palisade, resulting in a rounded or scooped appearance rather than a square, chiselled effect
- 9" of the tapered end of the palisades should protrude above the crest of the glacis
