PREFACE

Although a considerable amount of research had been done on the construction and furnishings of the barracks of the King's Bastion, there has been no adequate overall survey of the history of the building and its inhabitants. This report, which attempts to provide such a history, had as its base the excellent notes compiled by Mrs. Thériault for her report on furnishings. From there further research was done to clarify points raised in the notes or to fill in gaps not yet covered. As is often the case, this in turn led to further studies on related topics. Though not all problems have been solved, a healthy amount of new material has emerged.

I am indebted to my fellow researchers at Louisbourg who shared with me any information they came across on the barracks. In particular I should like to thank Mr. John Fortier, Head of Research, for his many helpful suggestions, and Mr. Charles Lindsay: Staff Archaeologist, whose findings on guard houses provided the key to a number of maps. I also gratefully acknowledge the patience, dedication and hard work of Mrs. Colette Adams who typed part of one draft, and of Miss Maggie Campbell who typed the finished draft.
