What does the
Latin inscription on the plaque mounted
on the landward side of the Frederic
Gate mean?
Ludovicus XV.
Franc. Et Nav. Rex
Ludovico-Burgo fundato
operibusque validissimus munato
Primarium hanc Vrbis Portam
Extrui atque ornari Jussit
anno M.DCCXL.
English
Translation:
Louis XV, King of
France and Navarre,
after Louisbourg has been built
and well fortified,
Has ordered that this Primary Gate of the City
Be built and equipped
in the year 1740.
French
Translation:
Après avoir fais
construire
et massivement fortifier Louisbourg,
Louis XV, roi de France et de Navarre,
ordonna que l'entrée principale de la ville
fût construite et équipée
en l'an de grâce 1740.
Note that the date of 1740 shown on the plaque probably refers to the date that the rebuilding of the Quai began, and is different from the date of 1742 shown on the plaque on the water side, which reads simply : "PORTE FREDERIC 1742", as is shown in one of Verrier's drawings.
