FOR THE BIRDS
October 1992
By
Helen O'Shea
Jackie Williams reports a GROUND DOVE coming and going all day on Saturday, 3 October. The Ground Dove is very small gray dove not much bigger than a sparrow, with a short black tail and round wings that flash rufous in flight. It inhabits coastal plain areas from South Carolina to Texas. Tuft's book notes that it has only made a few appearances north of its normal range.
Gwen Lunn saw a LEAST FLYCATCHER in her yard on October 13. You can find this little fellow and the Acadian and Alder Flycatchers in Peterson's A Field Guide to the Birds - Eastern Land and Water Birds on page 112. Flycatchers usually perch in an upright attitude on exposed twigs or branches, sallying forth at intervals to snap up passing insects. They are not as restless as most birds.
