FOR THE BIRDS

October 1988

By

Helen O'Shea

You may have noticed the MOURNING DOVE, a brown pigeon-like bird with a long tail and small head. For those interested in more detail the MOURNING DOVE is about 12 inches long, with an olive brown back, a black dot on the each side of its head below the ear, and noticeable black dots on each wing. The four middle tail feathers are black to the tip, while the outer tail feathers are broadly tipped with white. The breast is faintly pink and the small head is fawn coloured. Mourning doves tend to eat waste grain and seeds. They are usually ground feeders but will visit bird feeders during the winter.
