FOR THE BIRDS

June 1988

By

Helen O'Shea

Gwen Lunn called me in late May to say that she’d seen a Catbird, a Bohemian Waxwing and a female Blue Grosbeak at her place on Havenside. I mentioned the Blue Grosbeak last month. The Cat bird is slate-gray, with black cap and tail and chestnut under tail feathers. The Bohemian Waxwing is a sleek brown bird with a crest. It has a white streak under the eye and red, yellow and white on the wing tips. The tip of the tail is yellow and it has chestnut red under tail feathers.

For those of you who are interested in watching birds a reference guide is absolutely necessary. Try A Field Guide to the Birds ( Eastern Land and Water Birds), by Roger Tory Peterson. Those who want some additional detail can also buy Birds of Nova Scotia (3rd Edition) by Robie W. Tufts.
