FOR THE BIRDS
January 1993
By
Helen O'Shea
It is time to feed the birds. And it is important to keep feeding them once you have started. I discourage throwing out bread since it is not the best food for birds, particularly in the cold weather. Bill threw out some bread a few days ago and attracted squirrels and a flock of starlings.
Gwen Lunn spotted OLD SQUAW ducks on Thursday 17 December 1992 on Havenside. Leona Shepard saw a solitary BOHEMIAN WAXWING eating rosehips on her Upper Warren Street property on 20 December 1992. On New Year's Day I had 9 MOURNING DOVES and a CHIPPING SPARROW at my feeder. Sheila Fudge called on Friday, 8 January to say that the BLUE HERON was still in the Barrachois even though there was almost no open water. Biologist David Harris told Sheila that the HERON is not supposed to be here. Perhaps he was fooled by the mild weather we had until the end of December.
Gwen's son Gerry is mentioned in an article in the Chronicle-Herald for December 26, 1993.
