FOR THE BIRDS
April 1993
By
Helen O'Shea
You know it is spring with the arrival of FOX SPARROWS. Two of these large rust coloured birds arrived on Wednesday, April 7 at my backyard feeders. Now there are 3 coming regularly.
On March 29, Cathy Murrant from Port Morien was in the neighbourhood. She hopes to establish a series of bird-watching tours in the Port Morien and Louisbourg areas. She has received letters of support for her project from the Town and the Fortress.
If Cathy is successful she will be adding another small business to the neighbourhood. We can support her by letting her know of unusual sightings in Louisbourg. Wish her well.
The first RIVER OTTER seen in the area was on March 20 at the Old Town Barachois near the first entrance to the Fortress. Wallace Barter reported the location. Sheila Fudge reported the presence of another otter in the Havenside Barachois on April 1. She has spotted it several times since that time - once holding an eel in its paws.
The otter is amphibious and prefers to live on the shores of deep clear water in lakes, rivers, large marshes and ocean bays. Its maximum length is about 4.5 feet and maximum weight about 30 pounds. For a complete description see The Mammals of Canada, A.W.F. Banfield, University of Toronto Press, 1974.
