Dear Participant:

Re: Results of Migration Bird Count, May 9, 1998

A good deal of time has passed since you participated in the migration bird count in May. To refresh your memory of the day, however, you will find attached a compilation of our collective results for Cape Breton County. The delay in getting this information out to you is entirely my fault and I do apologise for it, particularly since it was such a pleasure for me to receive your results and comments on the day’s birding.

I have included the Cape Breton County results from 1997 as well as 1998, to provide some comparison. The 1998 results show almost 50% more individual birds than in 1997, as well as an additional 25 species. Part of the difference is certainly due to the weather conditions. Although the dense fog that many of us experienced this year did reduce some sightings, particularly of seabirds, it could not hope to compete in the Most Miserable Day of Birding category with May 10th, 1997, with its cold temperatures and relentless winds alternately driving heavy rain and snow.

Another major factor is the increased participation, with 90 observers in 1998 compared to 58 in 1997. New participants helped particularly in covering the Sydney-Coxheath area, Boularderie and Mira-Gabarus. The extra observers contributed both additional species and better number counts within species, helping to build a much better picture of the birds present in the county in early spring. I have not yet received the province-wide compilation from Judy Tufts, who compiles the results for Nova Scotia, but I am sure that it will show ours to be one of the most active counties in the province. The migration count relies entirely on the efforts of volunteers and you can all be duly proud of your contribution.

Many thanks to all who participated and congratulations on a job well done! Special thanks go to those who organised participants in particular areas: Pearl Magee in Louisbourg, Junior Metcalfe in Glace Bay, John Willie MacInnis around Big Pond and Barc Cunningham in Sydney-Coxheath. I hope that you will all keep May 8th, 1999 free for the next spring Migration Count - it is always held on the second Saturday in May.

Sincerely yours,
Susann Myers
