Volume 3: Number 7

This year in particular we have been reminded how lucky we are to live in this country, and in particular in beautiful Cape Breton Island. It is a time to give thanks and to be especially appreciative of our families and friends.

I want to express my thanks to all of you for your efforts and commitment to the special places we are entrusted to manage for Canadians now and in the future. In particular I would like to thank Sharon Morrow, Heather Dauphinee-Wilson and Dave Algar for the excellent leadership they have shown while delivering the ecological integrity training course to us and our partners. They have helped us all develop a deeper appreciation of how we must care for Cape Breton Highlands National Park. As well I want to thank Bill O’Shea, Sandy Balcom, Heidi Moses and the rest of the team that worked with the members of the Congregation of Notre Dame to realize the new exhibit. We have learned about the dedication of those women who served here in the eighteenth century and how successful we can be when we work with others.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !

Employee Christmas Dinner

This event was held December 5^th at the Church of England Hall. A delicious turkey meal was served and we all had a wonderful time. We even had a visit from someone very special!!!

 

Bill O’Shea presented Long Service Awards to Harold Antle, Tom Bates, Bill Leslie and Wendy Bryan. Wallace Lahey was also presented his long service award later in the day as he was not at the dinner.

We hope to make this dinner an annual event where all employees can get together for a meal and fun!!

Christmas Eve Luncheon

Once again plans are underway to hold the Christmas Eve Luncheon in the Admin Building on December 24^th.

Holiday Safety Tips - TREES

Many artificial trees are fire resistant. If you buy one, look for a statement specifying this protection.

A fresh tree will stay green longer and be less of a fire hazard than a dry tree. To check for freshness, remember: - A fresh tree is green. - Fresh needles are hard to pull from branches.

- When bent between your fingers, fresh needles do not break. 

- The trunk butt of a fresh tree is sticky with resin.

- When the trunk of a tree is bounced on the ground, a shower of falling needles shows that tree is too dry.

- Place tree away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. Heated rooms dry trees out rapidly, creating fire hazards.

- Cut off about two inches of the trunk to expose fresh wood for better water absorption. Trim away branches as necessary to set tree trunk in the base of a sturdy, water-holding stand with wide spread feet. Keep the stand filled with water while the tree is indoors.

- Place the tree out of the way of traffic and do not block doorways. Use thin guy-wires to secure a large tree to walls or ceiling. These wires are almost invisible.
