Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage has announced $3.4 million in funding for Louisbourg. This will go towards repairs of the King’s Bastion Barracks’ slate roof and chimneys and the fire suppression system to protect the reconstruction.

Minister Copps held a news conference in Louisbourg on Friday, November 16th . Many local people were in attendance and they enjoyed meeting Minister Copps and speaking with her after the announcement.

The Stewart Museum of Montreal is currently preparing a travelling exhibit entitled "French Americas. Cities of the King’s Engineers in the New World in the l7th and l8th centuries".

This exhibit is described as a voyage across time and distance. It aims to transport visitors to New France, Louisiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Guyana and reveals the diversity of designs prepared by engineers of the colonies.

We have been asked to lend curatorial items to the exhibit and are hoping to host it from May to October 2004 in the Museum on Site.

Chapel Island

John Johnston and Sandy Balcom met recently with Chief Lindsay Marshall, Lillian Marshall, Joel Denny, Richard Denny and Stan Johnson regarding the history of Chapel Island. A draft discussion paper has already been completed.

The computer training mentioned last month can be scheduled by contacting Amelia Ellis at 733-3507.

Several representatives of the Auditor General’s office were on the island this past week. They were here to familiarize themselves with our operations. They visited CBH, AGB and Louisbourg and met with managers.

Work on the waterline is progressing well. The contractor is working on Rue Royalle and Rue Toulouse.

We are getting ready for the repair work on the barracks roof. The pre-tender call has gone out. We’ve received thirty-six pallets of slate.

General Works staff mowed the glacis of the Royal Battery this week. This is being done to define the shape of the fortification so that visitors can appreciate it more readily.

Sandy Balcom and Brian Harpell are in Ottawa this week attending a curators workshop. Sandy will be chairing one of the discussions.

Tom Meagher is off for an Asset Managers workshop in Halifax next week.

Carol Whitfield is in Ottawa this week on business.

Anne O’Neill and Mark Sajatovich were in Halifax for the TIANS meeting in October.

The 2 day course will be held in Louisbourg November 28th and 29th at the United Church Hall.

A group of animators are spending their winter researching crafts that were being done in the l8th century. These included basket making, needlepoint, soap making, dyeing, spinning, weaving and tapestry making.

The group, namely Barb Kelly-Landry, Monique Berger and Anne Muggah, hope to bring some of these demonstrations to the site this coming summer and more the following year.

 

Employee Xmas Dinner

We are planning a turkey dinner for all employees at noon on December 5th. It will take place at the Church of England Hall, Main Street, Louisbourg. Cost per person is $7.50. Please contact Theresa Boone at Local 3531 by November 27th if you are interested in attending. Payment is due by December 3rd. for this dinner.

The Christmas Dinner and Dance will be held December 15, 2001 at the Stella Maris Hall in Louisbourg. Dinner is slated for 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $20.00 per couple and can be obtained from Donna MacNeil (Local 3551) or Alice Lahey at 733-2435.

.... the slate ordered for the King’s Bastion Barracks is from the same quarry in Virginia that originally supplied it for the reconstruction in the 60's.

....all compensatory leave must be liquidated before December 31st or it will automatically be paid out in the new year.

....the Christ Church Women’s Group is again selling evergreen Christmas Wreaths decorated with burgundy bows. Cost is only $12.00 each. Please notify Sandy Balcom by November 26th if you would like to order a wreath.
