It's that time again already!! The Fortress will be opened on Tuesday June 1^st with full animation and programs in place. The hours of operation are 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day. Entry fees are as follows:

• Adult $13.50

• Youth $ 6.75

• Senior $11.50

• Family/Group $33.75

Animation activities and tours times are as follows:

• 10:45 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. - A Soldier's Life: Military Demonstration at the Guardhouse, King's Bastion.

• 11:00 a.m. and 2 p.m. - Guided tours beginning at the De La Plagne House.

• 1:30 p.m. - Cannon demonstration at the Guardhouse, King's Bastion

• 3:45 p.m. - Military Demonstration at the Guardhouse, King's Bastion

• 4:30 p.m. - Cannon Demonstration on the Quay (waterfront).

The Green Committee has awarded the first Gaea Award to Gerry Lalonde!

Gerry was nominated by Frances Chezenko who highlighted Gerry's bike-riding to work, his non use of electric lighting in his office, and his paper re-cycling practices as making him worthy of the inaugural Gaea Award.

As well as the "Gaea" , which Gerry gets to keep in his office for the month, Gerry was also given a Louisbourg mug for him to keep, which was donated by the Fortress Association (Volunteers).

As pictured below, Gerry was presented with his award by Green Committee member Anne Marie Lane-Jonah.

 

 

 

 

 

French 74-gun Warship Model

We have installed a large model of a French 74-gun warship on the second floor of the Bigot residence. It is in the room overlooking the harbour that also features the Lewis Parker mural - View from a Warship.

Developed by French naval architects in 1737, this class of warship became the standard battleship for the rest of the 18^th century. In 1758, three were sunk in the harbour, while defending Louisbourg during the second siege. Our model depicts a 74-gun warship of around 1780 but the difference from those of the Louisbourg era lies primarily in having less hull decoration.

Model was made and donated to the Fortress by Lewis Butler, Perth, Ontario, while the rigging was done by Anchor Models, Lower Sackville , Nova Scotia.

News Flash: "Soffit Light Diffuser"nvented at AGBNHSC and AMr. Bell's Original Raspberry Vinegar@ makes its debut

On the matter of inventing, Alexander Graham Bell once said:

"Wealth and fame are coveted by all men, but the hope of wealth or the desire for fame will never make an inventor ... You may give him wealth or take away all that he has, and he will go on inventing. He can no more help inventing than he can help thinking or breathing, inventors are born not made."

And with those sage words in mind, we continue in the inventive spirit here at AGBNHSC.

Gary Pierrard, part of the team working on the exhibit lighting improvements, has invented "the soffit light diffuser":. The soffit light diffuser, created to solve the problem of higher than recommended lumen readings in artifact exhibit cases, is now doing its job in our IDEAS exhibit cases.

For the long life (for this and future generations to enjoy for all time) of the artifacts on display, lighting must be at a specific level to prevent deterioration and, while our new lighting is more energy efficient and of a much better quality for viewing the artifacts, it was discovered that it's lumen readings were much too high. So, Gary took vinyl soffit panels and drilled every other hole to enlarge them slightly. Then each panel was placed in the exhibit lid over the lighting tubes. The EUREKA moment had arrived and when the lumen test was done the readings at the base of the cases were within the guidelines. Bravo!

So ... in light of AGB's quote above, Gary fits the inventor part and we can only guess what levels of wealth and fame will be his!

At the Management meeting held at AGBNHSC, Carol Whitfield, Field Unit Superintendent, is pictured presenting Lenard Davis, General Works, with his 25th anniversary certificate, pin and a watch in honour of his years of service.

 

 

 

 

 

Babies, Babies and more Babies

Congratulations to Bill and Helen O'Shea on the recent birth of their grandson, William, on April 5^th weighing 7 lbs. 11 ounces. Here is a beautiful picture of the proud father, Patrick with his son.

Congratulations to Ken and Barb Donovan on the birth of their grandson, John Alexander. John came into this world on April 11, 2004 weighing 8 lbs. 9 ounces.

Congratulations to Valerie and Ronnie White on the birth of their granddaughter, Veronica Valerie. Little Veronica was born on May 14, 2004 weighing 7 lbs. 2 ounces.

Unfortunately, there are no pictures of John Alexander and Veronica but we are sure they are real cuties too!!!
