ALFHAM Annual Regional Meeting

Frances Chezenko, Fred Burke, Russell Blanchard and Nicole Molaison-Bell participated in the Annual Regional Meeting of the Association of Living History, Farms and Agricultural Museums. The two-day event which took place of King’s Landing Historic Settlement included sessions ranging from Media Relations to Interpretation Techniques and, of course, Farming and Animals.

The Fortress of Louisbourg will be hosting the 2002 International Meeting of the ALFHAM organization. Upwards of 300 people from around the world are expected to attend the week long event.

Mystery Tour

You still have two chances to see "CRY MURDER". This year’s Murder Mystery Tour has been presented Sunday nights since early June. The evening will start at 6:30 on the l7th and 24^th of this month. The show is about 2 hours long and has been very well attended throughout its run. The cost is $12.50 per person and you can reserve tickets by calling the Volunteer Association Gift Shop at (902) 733-2208.

La Veuve de Saint-Pierre 

Many of you will remember the major feature film produced at the Fortress in the spring of 1999. This was a France/Canada co-production starring Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteil. The film released in France last spring received a three-star rating. Lately it has been enjoying some attention on the film festival circuit. There was a gala screening last night at the Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto as part of the Toronto Film Festival - only a small number of films are selected for gala screenings. It will hold the place of honor for the official closing night at the Halifax Film Festival on September 23^rd. Tickets were sold out in the first 2 days. I have talked to one of the producers about a special screening in Sydney which would occur before the general commercial release in Canada later this fall. There is some hope that it will receive an Oscar nomination in the best foreign film category. Anne O’Neill will keep you posted on any new developments. 

CBH Golf Tournament 

Cape Breton Highlands’ annual Golf tournament is slated for October 13, 2000. All current and former employees with their significant others are eligible to play this tournament. Cost is $10.00 per person. All players must be registered by October 6^th. Employees wishing to register can call Jim MacIsaac at Local 3323. This is always a great event with lots of fun and good food and hopefully good weather!! 

News from AGB 

Aviation Day

Aviation Day celebrations in August were enjoyed by many and included a special presentation on Bell’s aviation legacy from his huge kites to the flight of "Silver Dart", Al Bernard’s Magic Show, airplane model displays, and musical entertainment with Raymond Ellis on fiddle and Susan MacLean on piano, a tetrahedral kite workshop for adults, and a tetrahedral party hat workshop for children. Cake and punch was served to hundreds.

Renewing Family Ties

On Friday, September 1^st., the Site enjoyed a visit from Donna Sorkin, Executive Director of Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing headquartered in Washington DC. This international association, established by Dr. Bell in 1887 (which he called the Volta Bureau) has as its purpose "...the increase and diffusion of knowledge relating to the deaf."

The Association is renovating its facilities and hopes to include some exhibits in the reception area. Encouraged by various directors of the Board, who have visited the Bell Museum and were impressed with its layout, Ms. Sorkin wanted to see how the story of Dr. Bell was told at this Site. She, too, was impressed and this informal visit was an excellent way to renew acquaintances with this Association which is also a major part of the AGB legacy.

Harvest Home

We’re celebrating our annual Harvest Home on this coming Saturday (Sept.16th) and CBC radio has helped us with promotion, airing public service announcements we phoned in. Information Morning host Ian MacNeil joined us on Site to make a 4-celled tetrahedral kite with Heritage Interpreter Mavis Morrison. Their kite making session was aired on Thursday and will no doubt encourage listeners to join the kite workshop offered during Harvest Home. The afternoon will include music, games, a food booth operated by Baddeck Playground Committee, clowns, magic and much, much more. 

CIBC Run for the Cure 

Helen O’Shea would like to thank the sponsors who generously donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation fund raiser that will take place on

Sunday, October 1, 2000 in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

This is the first time that a location in Cape Breton has been a centre for this event. During the fund raising efforts Helen discovered Andree Crepeau, husband Don, and daughter Simone, will also be participating in the walking component of this event. Also participating in this event is Irene Antle, Harold’s wife. She would like to thank employees for their support as well. 

Did you know....

....Congratulations are extended to Lillian Hamilton (Manager, Volunteer Association) and her new husband, Dean Underhill, on their recent marriage. It was a beautiful event that took place in the Chapel and restaurant on Site September 2^nd.
