Fortress Visitor Centre set to open May1st
On May1st the doors of the Visitor Reception Centre opened to the public at 9:30 a.m.. Guides will be available for the month of May to provide outside walking tours at 10:00 and 2:00 in English and at1:00 in French.
Visitors drive on site escorted by the guide who takes them on a tour of about 1 ½ hours. Entry fee in May is $4.50 adult, $2.25 youth, $3.50 senior and $11.25 for a family. These fees are subject to change.
Parks Canada Agency Uniforms
Our new uniforms are slowly becoming visible as more and more employees are being outfitted with them. The uniforms come complete with shorts and T-shirts for the warmer weather and toques and neckwarmers for the colder weather. J.R. Bourgeois is the contact person here at Louisbourg for the new uniforms. Although some are experiencing some problems with the ‘fit’, we are sure all the wrinkles will be ironed out soon.
Louise Johnston, is shown below in the warm fleece jacket and pants. This is great for our cool autumn days.

Learning and Discovery Pass 2002
This program was initiated last year with the main objective being to encourage employees to experience and learn about national parks and national historic sites across the country.
The program entitles employees who work for Parks Canada, for more than 60 days a year, to one pass allowing them and their immediate family (up to two adults and their dependent children) free entry to five different national parks or national historic sites.
Donna MacNeil is coordinating the distribution of these passes to the historic sites and Marie Cantwell will be responsible for the national park. They will be distributed as soon as possible after they are received in the parks.
Ecological Integrity Training
More training took place this past month for Ecological Integrity. This was the last training scheduled for EI at Louisbourg. Two more 12 hour sessions are planned for Ingonish and Cheticamp. We would like to thank Dave, Sharon and Heather for all their efforts . They did a wonderful job making us all aware of EI concerns.
Retirement Seminar
A 2-day retirement seminar was held in Louisbourg April 23rd and 24th with seventeen employees in attendance. Various topics were discussed including financial planning, income tax implications, estate planning and income security and pensions. Transition to retirement was also presented by Heather Davey, Psychologist from UCCB. Other speakers were Sheila Gillis, KPMG, Katie Markotich, Revenue Canada, Boe MacIntyre, LLB., and Betty Johnson, Income Security Program. Linda Bartlett and Valerie Chiasson discussed "Planning your Retirement Benefits".
The seminar was enjoyed by all and felt to have been of great assistance in planning their retirements.
News from AGB
It's that wonderful time of year when there's so much to do, so, we thought we'd share with you some words said by Alexander Graham Bell as he reflected upon that very situation and here's what he said:
"I have got work to do, so much work, on so many subjects, that I want many more years of life to finish it all."
Today, heritage presentation staff training begins at AGBNHS. We are looking forward to a busy visitor season. In May our hours of operation are 9 am to 5 pm daily and fee collection begins on May 15th.
Even though we still have some snow cover from yesterday's wintery blast, the flower beds on site are showing signs of life and we have our full complement of general works staff now.
School group bookings are underway for June in particular; tourism information publications are trickling in and each week more local businesses are opening their doors for the season.
Some of our staff participated in one day of supervisory training courtesy of CBHNP and we are thankful for the opportunity to participate.
We have had visitors in February, March and April from Germany, New Zealand, Turkey, USA (California, North Carolina, New York, Tennessee, Maine, Connecticut) , Denmark, Switzerland, Canada (Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick) and we hope they keep coming.
Condolences
Our sincere condolences go out to Lillian Bourgeois and J.R. Bourgeois on the death of Lillian’s father early in April.
Also sincere condolences to John Ward and family on the death of his father, Eric Davidson, on April 16th.
