Readers’ Choice Award
The Globe & Mail Readers’ Choice Awards recently named the Cabot Trail the Best Attraction in Eastern Canada and the Sheraton Hotel, the Best Hotel in Eastern Canada. The awards were announced at a special ceremony recognizing some of Canada’s most popular tourism destinations during the Tourism Industry Association of Canada Conference in November. This is the second year for the Readers’ Choice Awards which surveys Globe & Mail readers about their favourite hotels, attractions and vacation destinations. More than l,000 readers responded to the survey. Entrants were asked to select the best attraction, hotel and destination in four geographical categories across Canada; Western Canada, Ontario, Quebec and Eastern Canada.
Condé Naste Rankings
The UK Condé Naste Traveller magazine released results of a recent poll which had Canada ranked Number One in the countries category based on factors such as scenery, culture, climate, environmental friendliness, accommodations, food, people, etc.
Cape Breton faired well in this world class destination ranking placing ninth in the Environment/Scenery category and eleventh in the People/Friendliness category.

New Marketing Manager - CBI
Mark Sajatovich has accepted the position of Marketing Manager for the CBI Field Unit. Mark worked at the Fortress for 8 years as a seasonal employee in the Heritage Presentation Unit. He was vice president and marketing director of Portage, Inc. which produced a CD-ROM on the history of the Acadians. He is currently employed as a Digital Media Producer at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary.
Mark will start work on February 15th and will be located in the Administration Building. He can be reached by e-mail or Local 3545.
We welcome Mark, Sandra and their two daughters back to Cape Breton and wish him success in his new position.
New Client Services Officer - Visitor Activities
On February 1st, J.R. Bourgeois will assume the duties of Client Services Officer at the Fortress of Louisbourg. The position was filled as a result of a competition held earlier this year.
J.R. has been with the Fortress since 1978 when he was hired as a Park Interpreter. In 1999, he took on the position of Program Assistant which he held for the past two seasons. Outside the Fortress walls, J.R. was a founding member of Portage Inc.,(along with Mark Sajatovich) a company that produced a CD-ROM on the Acadians and J.R. was a member of the musical group "Les Habitants".
J.R.’s responsibilities as CSO will include all aspects of the operation of the Visitor Centre, the interpretive guides on site as well as Outreach Programming and industry relations.
We wish J.R. success in his new position and look forward to working with him. J.R.’s office is located in the Training Room (until we move back to De La Plagne in the spring) and he can be reached at Local 3425 or by e-mail.
Kevin LeBlanc, another long time seasonal employee, will be taking up the duties of the Program Assistant vacated by J. R. Kevin will start work in April.
New Human Resource Clerk
Sylvia Trimm has returned for a term as our Human Resource Clerk. Sylvia’s responsibilities are taking care of the PeopleSoft Leave System and providing clerical support to our Compensation Unit.
Most of you remember Sylvia as she worked for many years as our Personnel Services Supervisor and later as our Administrative Services Officer. Sylvia is located in the Compensation Office and can be reached at Local 3118. She is working part-time and her days of work are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
We all welcome Sylvia back and wish her success and happiness in this new position.
Change of Hours of Operation
For the 2001 season, the Fortress will be making an adjustment in the hours of operation. In July and August, the Fortress will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. instead of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Hours of operation will remain the same for May, June, September and October.
Condolences
Our sincere condolences to Donald MacKenzie and his family on the death of his father, Alexander MacKenzie. Mr. MacKenzie worked at the Canal for many years and is remembered fondly by several of the staff here in Louisbourg.
Sincere condolences are also sent to Maura McKeough and her family on the tragic death of her brother, Philip on January 12, 2001.
Sincere condolences are also sent to Ann Coleman on the death of her brother, John Allan McLellan who passed away in Vancouver on January 21, 2001.
