Procureurs ~ General Discussion

The office was ones of trust, the holders representing the interests of both king and public in seeing that laws were obeyed and justice rendered impartially. The king's attorney was responsible for investigating and presenting civil and criminal cases to the court for its decision.

A procureur might receive or he might lodge a complaint. If he decided to prosecute, and there was a trial, he then prepared the documentary evidence, presented the facts and indicated (not agued) the relevant points of law. He then offered his conclusions, including a sentencing recommendation, to the judge.

A procureur might also initiate a sale auction where an estate was left without heirs or executors, or where the court itself had a direct interest.
