AN INTERPRETATION OF BUILT EVENTS 
HISTORICAL CONSTRUCTION CHECK LIST (1744 - 1745)

The key maps for a 1744-1745 structural interpretation are 1725-8, 1725-8a, 1726-1, 1726-1a, 1729-3, 1750-1, and 1752-10. As maps 1726-1 and 1726-1a are judged more accurate than maps 1725-8 and 1725-8a, so too is map 1752-10 to that of map 1750-1. Where these do not provide a particular detail, then maps ND-82, 1731-1, 1731-3 and 1745-4 may be used.

Many of the assertions have been assigned a credibility rating. They are as follows:

(5) GENERAL LAYOUT

(a) General

(i) The rubble stone masonry building occupied the entire Rue d'Orléans front of Block 13. Standing 2 1/2 storey's tall, it had a pavilion at each end - with basements below - and, between, the hospital wards with an attached central pavilion topped by a bell tower.⁽²³⁸⁾

It had casement style windows, numerous windows grilled with iron bars and/or shutters - including shuttered dormers - a mixture of interior mortar renderings and vertical wooden wall claddings, and a variety of finished doorways.⁽²³⁹⁾

A number of architectural features included cut stone quoins for building corners; a simple, non-quoin stone, window surround design; chimney caps; a wide, and a weather-vane upon the bell tower. Window, dormer, and chimney stacks were generally of a balanced design.⁽²⁴⁰⁾

Structurally, among other things, the roof consisted of a king post and purlin system and the ends of its ground floor and first storey joists were embedded into the perimeter walls.⁽²⁴¹⁾

(b) Rue d'Orléans/Rue d'Estrées east right aisle/right pavilion

(i) This wing consisted of a ward for sick officers, a sacristy, and a chapel:

(I) In the northern half of this wing, there was a ward consisting of 5 rooms for sick officers. Two were located on the ground-floor with the other 3 on the first storey above, accessed by a large U-shaped wooden stairway. Beneath this stair, a small stairway led to the basement below (a work area which was also serviced by two exterior basement doors). The attic function was unspecified.⁽²⁴²⁾

(II) There was one ground-floor dual fireplace complex, located in the officers' ward, serving two rooms, defined by the fireplace mass and one wooden partition. Above, in the first-storey above, there would have been additional fireplaces (or stoves) in the remaining three officers' rooms.⁽²⁴³⁾

(III) To the south of the ground-floor ward, there was a corridor - defined by the northern masonry bearing wall that carried the officers' fireplaces and by a southern wooden partition - which open upon the 2 officers' rooms to the north, upon the terrace to the west (by means of an exterior step), and upon the sacristy to the south.⁽²⁴⁴⁾

(IV) The sacristy in turn accessed the two-storey chapel, at the corner of Rue d'Orléans and Rue d'Estrées, which had a iron grilled door centered upon a distinctive partition wall to the west that opened upon a long east ward. Whether there was a second doorway leading, as it did in 1726, directly from the east ward to the sacristy, allowing the chapel to be by-passed, is problematic. The ceiling - both it and the walls were wood covered - rose two storeys high , allowing windows in the upper ward to overlook it. Possibly too, below, in the chapel door and partition, windows also existed, looking into the lower ward.⁽²⁴⁵⁾

The roof was wood shingled. Fire prevention roof ladders were installed.⁽²⁴⁶⁾

(c) Rue d'Orléans east and west hospital wards and Rue d'Orléans hospital's central pavilion

(i) To the west of the chapel, the ground floor and first storey, Rue d'Orléans hospital, accessed from the exterior by a central passageway, consisted of long wards serviced by an attached, raised Rue d'Orléans hospital's central pavilion - topped by a 8-sided bell tower - consisting of latrines, a mortuary with its chapel, an apothecary, an apothecary's réserve (storeroom) and prison when required, and a guard room. The attic function was unspecified:⁽²⁴⁷⁾

(I) The ground-floor east and west wards - which were heated by iron, wood-burning stoves - were mirror images of each other, serviced by the arched doorways of the north/south central passageway which divided the hospital complex exactly in half. Each ward also opened upon a room to the north, located in the Rue d'Orléans hospital's central pavilion: latrines (in the eastern portion of the Rue d'Orléans hospital's central pavilion with its stack flue for venting cesspool gas from below), and the guard's room with its fireplace (in the western portion). This configuration was the same on the first-storey. Above, in the attic, the floor was finished off with an upper surface of flooring planks.⁽²⁴⁸⁾

(II) The central passageway of the Rue d'Orléans east and west hospital wards opened up to the south, by means of an exterior step, upon Rue d'Orléans, and to the north, after passing through the Rue d'Orléans hospital's central pavilion - again by means of a substantial exterior step covered by a storm porch when deemed necessary - upon the terrace. In the Rue d'Orléans hospital's central pavilion, an east door of the central passageway accessed the mortuary with its chapel, and, to the north of it, set against a wooden partition, a stairway which led to the upper Rue d'Orléans east and west hospital wards via an upper entry (and, where no doubt, were to be found mirror images of the ground floor mortuary and apothecary room and storeroom but with other but unspecified functions such as linen storage and the like). Likewise, a west door accessed the apothecary with its furnace, and to the west of it, closed off from the guard room by a wooden partition, the apothecary's réserve (storeroom) and prison.⁽²⁴⁹⁾

The roof over a portion of the east ward was wood shingled. The remainder was covered with black slate.⁽²⁵⁰⁾

(d) Rue d'Orléans/Rue Dauphine west left aisle/left pavilion

(i) From the ground-floor west ward of the hospital a door opened into the quarters of the Brothers in the Rue d'Orléans/Rue Dauphine west left aisle/left pavilion consisting of basement, ground floor and first storey eating, living and sleeping accommodations respectively:

(I) Along the east side of the ground-floor southern portion of the Rue d'Orléans/Rue Dauphine west left aisle/left pavilion wing ran a corridor - defined by a wooden partition - that to the south serviced a priest's room and wooden partitioned-off cabinet, and to the north, a parlour, then a U-shaped stairway set against a wooden partition- which, from the east side, accessed below the basement kitchen/dépense (storeroom) - indirectly through a second basement room (cave) located to the south of the kitchen - and above the first storey living quarters for the Brothers - then a doorway with exterior steps to the terrace, and finally the dining room in the extreme north portion of this wing. Behind the stairway, set along its western wooden-partitioned wall, stood a small room, which directly accessed both the parlour and the dining room.⁽²⁵¹⁾

Finally, there was an exterior basement door which also serviced the kitchen and an attic, where the hospital attendants were lodged.⁽²⁵²⁾

(i) In the eastern corner of the property along Rue Royalle stood the rubble stone masonry Rue Royalle east pavilion housing both the Rue Royalle/Rue d'Estrées east wash-house and the Rue Royalle east bakery:⁽⁵⁵⁷⁾

(II) The third, to the south facing Rue d'Estrées, was the wash-house, likewise with a west doorway opening into the inner courtyard. An unusual shaped fireplace, no doubt for heating water, stood against its north wall. (i) In the western corner of the property along Rue Royalle stood the Rue Royalle west rubble stone masonry pavilion housing the storehouse/stables/menagerie:⁽⁶⁰¹⁾

(I) This pavilion served only as a stable and menagerie at the beginning. The addition of the henhouse reflected an increased use for this building. The storehouse and stabling functions likely began in the pre-1745 period but this conclusion remains problematic.⁽⁶⁰²⁾

(II) This pavilion consisted of three ground-floor rooms. If one accepts an increased function, then at the corner of the street there was a storehouse entered from the inner courtyard through an exterior door and, to the east, connected to the horse-cow sheds through an arched interior doorway. The horse-cow sheds were also entered through an exterior doorway facing the inner courtyard. The third room was created by extending the roof slope of the stables southwards and it housed hens, as well as sheep (with at least one, if not two, small doorways leading to the inner courtyard).⁽⁶⁰³⁾

(i) Landscaping included a terrace and an inner courtyard and their associated features - wells, interior fences, gardens, yards, cesspool, drains, and exterior building perimeter pavé:

(I) From the terrace, ramps at either end - servicing the doorways of both the eastern and western pavilions of the hospital complex - and a pair in the centre, opposite the hospital's exterior central passage way doorway, were to lead to the inner courtyard.⁽⁶⁶⁸⁾

The terrace wall was faced with cut stone, with cut stone corner steps at each end. Set in the wall was an iron balustrade.⁽⁶⁶⁹⁾

(II) Two wells stood in the inner courtyard:

(A) One against the perimeter property fence, at the south wall of the Rue Royalle east pavilion, housing the bakery/wash-house.⁽⁶⁷⁰⁾

(B) One against the perimeter property fence, near the north wall of the Rue d'Orléans/Rue Dauphine west left aisle/left pavilion.⁽⁶⁷¹⁾

(III) Interior piquet fences, with braced gates, creating two gardens in the inner courtyard - one to the east and to the west of the Rue Royalle central gateway - with a central passageway leading from the gateway to the terrace ramps, together with possibly other fenced and open yard areas, such as a separate lower yard, with their gates. Here might be found sun-dials as well.⁽⁶⁷²⁾

(IV) Underground cesspool located under the interior hospital latrines and continuing into under the terrace.⁽⁶⁷³⁾

(V) An underground hospital latrine drain across the terrace and inner courtyard that emptied into the Grand Étang. On the terrace, a brick man-hole serviced it.⁽⁶⁷⁴⁾

(VI) Both the terrace and the inner courtyard had pavé against the perimeter walls of one building, if not against all buildings.⁽⁶⁷⁵⁾
