CONTENT REPORT

ADMIRALTY L: (LIEUTENANT'S LOGS)

1. Of the approximately 5000 volumes in this series 1 searched 805 volumes, obtaining 1054 items of which 589 referred to volumes which held nothing of interest to the project

2. National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, England.

3.The volumes searched were selected by use of the list of ships on the North American station compiled by John Gutsell. All of these ships were looked up in the National Maritime Museum index and where the log was available it was searched.

This series consists of the logs kept by the lieutenants of the various navy ships. There is often more than one log per period per ship as more than one lieutenant would keep a record, under the captain's instructions. It should be noted that many logs appear to be missing as there seems to be no necessary continuity. The logs were arranged in a most erratic order - bound into volumes almost haphazardly. The only order seemed to be in the fact that generally the logs in the separate volumes belonged to the same ship.

The subject dealt with in the logs are similar to those dealt with in Admiralty 51 at the PRO (Captain's Logs). Important logs are those of the DIANA and the NAMUR for the 1758 siege; There are several good logs of the 1745 siege; there is a log relating to the matter of prisoners in the Canso affair of 1724. (Captain St Lo of the LUDLOW CASTLE) There are the usual frequent references to cruising off Cape Breton in the 1750's, of visits to Cape Breton after 1758 and several references to visits to parts of the island in the 1780's. There are many logs of both sieges; these very in interest.

The log of the DIANA for 1753 is written by the lieutenant who apparently discovered the landing place for Wolfe.

4. All items of interest to the project  were collected.
