Fortress of Louisbourg
APPENDIX G. PROFESSIONS CLAIMED BY SOME ISLE ROYALE SOLDIERS, 1720-1745.
- weaver
- carter
- butcher
- farmer
- shoemaker
- vine-grower ["Vigneron"]
- farmer ["laboureur"]
- gardener (2)
- glazier
- tailor
- cooper
- joiner
- tanner
N.B. These examples are taken from the judicial records. They must be used with caution as there was nothing to prevent the men from misrepresenting their occupations. The cooper, for example, was only an apprentice. The soldier who styled himself "laboureur" (a prestigious title normally reserved for the richest section of the peasantry) was in fact employed as a gardener before he enlisted.
