According to Holland, who also noted that the French did not employ any fishing shallops or decked schooners at Port Toulouse:

A DESCRIPTION OF THE ISLAND OF CAPE BRITAIN relative to the Plan surveyed, agreeable to the Orders & Instructions of the Right Honorable the Lords Commissioners for Trade & Plantations

... Porte Toulouse, or Port Augustus

To Porte Toulouse, or Port Augustus, the Coast is low, with some Coves; & and Beaches; Lands & Woods indifferent along the Coast, but better in Proportion to the Distance from the Shore. This Port is fit for Vessels of 130 Tons, & no Place could be better situated for Trade than this; for the Neck of Land that divides it from St. David's Channel is only 2,400 Feet over; so that it enjoys equally the Navigation of the Lake St. George [Bras d'Or] & the Ocean.

The Land is also very good, of which there is about 300 Acres clear; & the Remains of the French Fort & Settlements are convincing Proofs of what Importance it was of to the French who had constantly here a Party of 50 Men in Garrison, to enforce the Police; & who upon any Emergency could be enforced by the Mission at Famille Islands with any Number of Indians. As no Place can be fortified with less Expence; besides its' other Advantages, I have laid out 8,320 Acres for Frederic Town Lot. Neither can it be any great Objection, that the Port is not of a sufficient Depth, nor Vessels of larger Burden than aforementioned, since Richmond Channel is so nigh, where the greatest may lie in all Safety ... According to a letter of the Governor of St. Pierre et Miquelon, L'Espérance:

[PRÉCIS OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT]

L'envie extrême que j'avais de satisfaire la vôtre sur le mouvements de nos voisins ... je témoignait dernièrement au nommé Abraham Dugas, ancien habitant de l'Isle Royale et à plusieurs autres colons qui font exercer et exercent eux mêmes la pêche en goelettes dans ces Isles, combien j'aurais désiré que quelques uns de nos bâtiments pêcheurs pussent relâcher à la côte de Louisbourg, et me rapporter, s'il était possible, des nouvelles certaines des affaires de Boston. Le dit Dugas, pour répondre à mes désirs, s'embarqua lui-même dans une de ses goelettes et, après avoir resté quelque jours sur le banc de St. Pierre (peu èloigné de l'Isle Royale) se trouvant débarqé par le mauvais temps, prit ce prétexte plausible pour relâcher à Louisbourg; où il reçut du capitaine d'un transport qui arrivait de baston pour se charger en plein de charbon de terre pour l'usage de l'escadre, les information suivantes: ...

Le bois manque absolument à ces troupes d'Angleterre: et leurs chefs ont pris le parti d'envoyer des ouvriers à Louisbourg pour faire tirer des mines qyi y sont une quantité immense de charbon de terre; Le Sieur Dugas qui connait parfaitement ces mines s'y transporta et conversa avec plusieurs de ces ouvriers qui convinrent que ce secours de charbon ne pouvait être que momentané et ne pourrait en aucune manière suppléer au défault du bois dans l'escadre et la garnison si l'une et l'autre hivernent à Boston. Les habitants de l'Isle Royale (ainsi que ceux de Terre-neuve) sont dans une grande disette de vivres. Les Bostonnais ont coutume chaque printemps d'aller traitter à Louisbourg, et cette année il n'y en a paru aucun. Halifax n'est gardé que par des français acadiens qui après la paix ont resté dans cette partie, les habitants anglais ayant été obligés de se joindre la pluspart à l'armée des Royalistes. Le petit nombre d'habitans anglais qui sont à Louisbourg craignent qu'on ne les force également à se réunir à la dite armée.(1155)

Port Toulouse --- (or Augustus) the coast is low with some coves and Sandy Beaches, --- Lands and Woods indifferent along the Coasts but better in proportion to the distance from the Shore --- This Port is fit for Vessels of 130 Tons and no place better situated for Trade than this, -- for the neck of Land that divides this place from St David's Channel is only 2400 feet over, so that it enjoys equally the Navigation of the lake of Saint George and the Ocean. The Land is also very good of which there are about 300 Acreas clear, and the remains of the French Fort and settlements are convincing proofs of the importance it was to the French ...(1160)
