VOLUME TWO:

CHRONOLOGY OF ALL EVENTS (1713-1860)

1725 and 1725 - 1730 and 1725 - 1745

YEAR: 1725

1725 - APRIL 10

Repeating mostly a 1724 memoire:

[PRÉCIS AND SUMMARY OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT]

Memoire du Roi pour servir d'instruction au Sr. de Conteneuil, Enseign de Vaisseau sur le service qu'il va faire à l'Isle Royalle.

On arrival at Isle Royale to take the necessairy measures with St. Ovide and de Mezy for unloading his cargo and to get receipts.

To go to Port dauphin and even to Port Toulouse, as St. Ovide and de Mezy decide and take on the materials necessary for the fortifications. To continue this service as long as he is in the colony.

If it can be done without endangering the ship, he is to leave 7 or 8 sailors at Louisbourg for the works while at Port Dauphin and Port Toulouse. In this case to leave them provisions for the time he is away.

To wait until the work has stopped at Louisbourg to return to France, and not to leave until St. Ovide and de Mezy think he is no longer needed.

Seven months provisions on the Victoire. De l'Etendeure has orders to give him enough for 2 or 3 weeksif he needs it.(368)

1725 - MAY 22

According to Maurepas writing to de Selle:

[SUMMARY OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT]

The Sr. de Pensens, who is carrying this letter, is included in the accounts for Isle Royale this year for his salary 1080" as Captain and a gratification of 300" as commander of Port Toulouse.(369)

1725 - MAY 26

[PRÉCIS OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT]

[PRÉCIS OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT]

[BACK-GROUNDER THREAD - Dugas]

1725 - JULY 25

According to Maurepas writing to St. Ovide:

[SUMMARY OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT]

Approves his trip to Port Toulouse and Labrador to distribute the King's presents to the savages.(372)

1725 - JULY 25

According to Maurepas writing to de Mezy:

[SUMMARY OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT]

Port Toulouse is too near the English and Acadia to remove the garrison. This is not true of the detachment at Port Dauphin which seems useless when it is not employed gathering materials for the fortifications.(373)

1725 - JULY 25

According to Maurepas writing to St. Ovide:

[SUMMARY OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT]

By sending the company at Port Toulouse to work at Louisbourg last year gave the English a chance to send several small boats into the harbour, and the commander at Canceau a chance to equip a small boat to hinder those carrying animals from Acadia to Isle Royale. Not to send them this year, all the more because of the expenses. Up to him to know whether a company or a detachment is needed and then leave them there because it is during the work season they are most needed at Port Toulouse.

Did well to request that the Commandant of Canceau return the Acadian boat with animals for Louisbourg he seized.

When he suggested a militia company of 50 men for Port Toulouse he didn't know they had no other trade.

When Louisbourg is secure, funds will be designated for the redoubt he proposed at Port Toulouse.

If the English think of establishing themselves on Ile St. Jean, must make the expenses to chase them away. To prevent it to send a detachment of 25 to 30 soldiers with an enseign and a captain, who must be discreet and firm. If he chooses de Pensens, he must send another captain to Port aToulouse.(374)

1725 - MAY 22

According to Maurepas writing to de Mezy:

[SUMMARY OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT]

Has examined the list of Acadians, food distributed to them, and that remaining in the warehouses. Has not ordered any for this year, not only because the king is not in a position to augment expenses, but also brcause it seems useless. The Acadians that came to Isle Royale are carpenters and builders attracted by profit, or tavern keepers who could not find a living in Acadia who do no work on the Island. Fund intended to help those who came to farm until they were able to grow enough to eat.

The surgeon at Port Toulouse to receive 300" but no rations. (375)

1725 - JULY 29

According to Maurepas writing to St. Ovide and de Mezy:

[SUMMARY OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT]

Last year's provisions for the Acadians not consumed as they did not come. Those that have come up until the present year have not been farmers but carpenter-constructors attracted by profit in building goelettes, and tavern keepers one might wish not to have come.(376)

1725 - JULY 31

According to Maurepas writing to Beauharnois:

[SUMMARY OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT]

Not sending provisions for the Acadians as none came to Isle Royale in 1724 and those that had been sent for that year were not distributed.(377)

1725 - OCTOBER 17
