SCANNING PROJECT AND NEW REPORTS
The 2003 project of scanning Fortress of Louisbourg typed reports into html text format has now ended. The Institute will resume this scanning project in 2004 and is now accepting candidates. Please keep in mind that the reports must be well-typed to minimize the proofing that is always required. Also note that, generally, the illustrations and graphs - and sometimes the endnotes as well - are not included, and, for these, for the time being, the library report at the Fortress of Louisbourg should be consulted. The reasons for the missing material are varied:
(1) The illustrations are copyrighted
(2) The non-copyrighted illustrations/graphs are repetitive from report to report and will be the subject of a future scanning project that will collect one copy of each to which the numerous report links will be made as required
(3) The non-copyrighted illustrations/graphs require digitizing at a resolution higher than normal
(4) The endnotes are in the format of reproduced 5x8 cards
(5) The non-scanned material was of poor quality
One of the last three reports scanned this year may be of interest to some:
Preliminary Historical Report - Royal Battery No. 2, By J. Humphreys , Unpublished Report H F 5 (Fortress of Louisbourg, October 15, 1964):

NEW RESEARCH
Over the fall/winter/spring the Institute will research the "French and Spanish Archives, 1763-1841." also known as the "St Louis Archives". The 23 microfilm reels will be received two at a time and returned to the lender. They are reminiscent of : "France, Archives Nationales, Section Outre-Mer, Série G2: Registres des Greffes du Conseil Supérieur de Louisbourg (Greffes Judiciares)" and "Série G3: Notariat de Ile Royale 1727-1758". These two series were invaluable in interpreting many aspects of Fortress life.
A report will be produced that focuses not only on immediate Fortress of Louisbourg Structural Design Team requirements (drains and gutters), but also on specific gaps in the Louisbourg research programme. The inventory, which has already been received, shows much promise.

UNAVAILABLE
The webmaster will be away from Cape Breton for much of August and September. However, he can be contacted at krausehouse@krausehouse.ca and, generally - except for a short period - can update the site and answer e-mail inquiries.
