Contact”

(Now Expired)
The ATLANTIC CANADA WORKSHOP is an interdisciplinary conference that brings together researchers from many fields whose work focuses on Atlantic Canada. Presentations by graduate students, new scholars and international scholars are particularly welcome at these meetings. The next workshop (14th biennial) will meet from 14-16 October 2004, at the University College of Cape Breton and Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, during Cape Breton’s “Celtic Colours” week.
This year’s theme of ‘contact’ is the 400th anniversary of the establishment of a permanent French settlement in the region, marking the foundation of European culture in North America, but the region that comprises Atlantic Canada has been a meeting place of diverse nations, cultures and ideas for millennia. Contact can be constructed as an event or a process, but it is always an exchange between two or more individuals or groups and their beliefs, institutions, ideas, ideals and world-views. These interactions in Atlantic Canada have led to conflict, toleration, cooperation, and the creation of new frameworks for action, new identities, and distinctive cultures. The process of making contact continues to shape the region today as Atlantic Canadians continue to redefine themselves in response to contact with changing regional, national and global contexts. The process and effects of ‘making contact’ in the Atlantic region is the broad focus of this call for papers. Presentations covering all time periods and parts of the region are welcome as individual papers or as panels. Some funding may be available to support student travel. Contact the organizers for more information.
The deadline for abstracts and panel proposals is 30 January 2004.
