Subject: Enns family tree

Hi Eric,

We have common ancestors, namely Anna Enns (born Wiebe) and Jakob Enns, which were my great-great-grandparents. Their daughter Anna Enns (1859-1914) was my great-grandmother. She married Gerhard F. Dyck. Their son Heinrich was my grandfather. My father Johann is named John on your website – he died 3 years ago. He also had a brother called Heinrich. We moved out of the USSR in 1990 to Germany. For the last two years I'm trying to piece together my family tree and got involved into genealogy. You can find my website here: http://familienforschung.online-dick.de/index.php?id=57 it's German though. I'd like to get to know more about the Enns family and their ancestors. Do you possibly have any photographs or other documents? I have a picture with Anna Enns-Wiebe and her daughters – at least I think that's who they are. But I don't know who's who. Maybe you can help me?

Hello Rita:

So nice to meet you. It took me a bit to see how we were related.
What a lot of work you have done. I need to do this for my family.

My Enns information doesn't go back any further than what you have.
The only photo I have that I didn't see on your site is attached.
I have no idea who the other ladies are in the photo.

What I spent hours reading was Jacob G. Dyck's story translated by his son.
Erica (Mathies) wife of Geo. Dyck that did some translating is my 1st cousin on my Dad's side. http://familienforschung.online-dick.de/index.php?id

[George Jacob Dyck b: October 17, 1909 in Ukraine d: 1997 +Erica Mathies b: October 31, 1920 in Ukraine d: September 25, 2008 in St. Catharines, Ontario m: August 06, 1949]

My parents visited with their family years ago when I was little and they lived in Leamington.
Jakob G. Dyck owned a grocery store then and was known to us as 'Sturmann Jasch Dyck."
There was something about them that as a child I always thought they were royalty.
Thank you so much for sharing.

Good Night, Louise (Dueck, Mathies) Ross

TRANSLATION - GERMAN TO ENGLISH

Anna Enns married Gerhard Franz Dück on Jan 28, 1882.

About Enns ancestors I knew nothing. But thanks to the diary of Jasch Dyck (my grandfather's brother Henry Dick) I could bring in a bit of experience.

Jacob Enns # 102056 was born in 1824 in Ohrloff. In 1851 he married Maria Froese, who died in 1855, leaving two sons, Jacob and Abram. Abram emigrated to 1870 to America, where he apparently worked in a bank. He married in Chicago. In 1925, a year before the siblings of my grandfather came to Canada, he died. Abram left a daughter, who was a teacher in Chicago. Jacob Enns remained in Tiege and Ohrloff, was a landowner, and had a large family.

In 1856, my great-great-grandfather Enns has remarried Anna Wiebe # 133559.

Anna and Jacob Enns had many beautiful daughters, the second of them, Anna # 133561, was my great-grandmother.

Jacob Enns had his own shop in Halbstadt. He bought oats in Kharkov and sent it to Halbstadt, where his wife received and paid for it. He also traveled to Crimea to buy and send salt. The two sons, Jacob and Abram had big enterprises during the so-called Crimean War. During this time they have supplied various foods, often under dangerous circumstances. Jacob Enns was also engaged in other businesses. He bought land with his two brothers in Jakaterinslav (Dnepropetrovsk). After some time the brothers went their separate ways due to family disputes. Then Jacob Enns bought an estate near the city of Mariupol and engaged in sheep farming. He sold wool and so came into big money. And also there he lost his entire fortune. They went bankrupt. Because the estate was not far from Berdyansk (Sea of Azov) there went the older children, including my great-grandmother Anna, to a German village school. Before that, she had her earlier education in Halbstadt where she was taught by the famous poet and minister, Bernhard Harder. Here Anna Enns received a good base of knowledge in her childhood, she has made for a quiet, gentle and pious wife and mother in the later years. Finally, the Enns family had to leave the property and moved to Blumenort and settled in a modest house, not far from the family Dyck down.

Jacob Enns died shortly thereafter on 27 March in 1880.

At that time, my great-grandfather Gerhard Dyck # 133538 was 20 years old and unmarried. Anna Enns was the same age. Both houses were in the same area outside of town and it is obvious that the two met and fell in love. They were married on 28 January, 1882. Shortly before the wedding, they were separated, because my great-great-grandmother Enns moved with her family to Ohrloff (approx. 3 miles to the west of Blumenort). Ohrloff was the village where a church, high school, doctor, pharmacy and the hospital was located. The Enns family earned their living mainly by sewing. Gerhard Dyck rode several times a week with his proud black horse to the house of his loved one in Ohrloff.

Anna and Gerhard had 8 children. The 6th, my grandfather Heinrich, was born in 1892 The youngest was Helena (geb.1896). It was the day before Christmas, 24 December, 1899. There was an organ just arrived from America, which Gerhard Dyck had ordered from a Salesman from Odessa. When unpacking all were there, except for Anna with the young Helena, who was sick, who had gone with her into the other room. After some time, the child struggled and died. Helena had a contagious disease called croup, which suffocated the child. The luck of the day turned to sadness and grief. She was barely three years old and her mother took care of the corpse. On her gravestone in the cemetery were the words:

"A little angel took your hand

And led them into the promised land. "
