Halifax Herald 1/10/2003

Cromarty Tennis Club
[Cromarty Kinsmen Tennis Club - Sydney Lawn Tennis Club - Sydney Tennis Association]

Wed, 30 Jul 2003

As discussed during the last executive meeting:

I was into UCCB today and began researching the Cromarty Tennis Club. Lots and lots of stuff to look at. For those who were not at this meeting, I have agreed - more than happy - to do this historical research at no charge to the Club.

At any rate, Sydney was an exciting place to be at the turn of the 20th century, and there was enthusiasm in the town perhaps unmatched at any time in its history.

Believe it or not, in "sports", golf ruled King - at least amongst Kings (i.e. bankers and lawyers, and even the clergy). Cricket and baseball were happenings - and were widely popular with the common folks. As for Tennis - the North Sydney Club was very active, and able to raise funds; but in previously poor old Sydney, Tennis had entered harder days, no doubt as North Sydney became the more richer and populous of the two.

But suddenly, because of steel and coal, Sydney's population went from 2,427 in 1891 to 9,908 in 1901. In the same year, Howard Ross [Howard S. Ross (1872-post 1926)], a lawyer (and well known on the links at Victoria Park), called for "a meeting of those interested in Lawn Tennis and in carrying on the old club ...". That year, H. H. Sutherland was even selling "The celebrated Good-Year Glove Tennis Shoes (with white soles) ~ for Ladies and Gentlemen.." which I suppose might be popular for events other than tennis! (i.e. boating). This needs to be looked at.

Well, Richard, you can see the problem here. We have to find out the relationship between the "old club" and the "Sydney Tennis Association, inc." before we can establish a founding date. No doubt, their locations are different (possible the old club was at Victoria Park?), and their surfaces may even be different (grass versus clay), but if there is a connection - i.e. one begot the other - , we should go with that since the older that we can establish our club, the better our bragging rights when going against say Halifax for money. Indeed, if the club dates back another 50 years, or so, to the Victorian age, we may have a 150 anniversary for example.

Of interest, the 9 hole course at Victoria Park was declared, in 1901, as being the oldest course in the province. Et Tu the Tennis Club as well?

Now - I would suggest that we get a new sign on which the "establishment" date could be added at a later date. I will be away later this month and into much of September on a Ottawa/St. Louis research trip and so I can't really do much more research until after that (but which I will do as promised), and I have some roof work to do this week each afternoon while the rain possibility seems clear. So if we could wait a bit, until the fall, for the "est." date, this would be best.

Something else to think about - You gave me the info - that Ken Haley dug up - that the Rev. Hugh McLeod [1803-1894] granted the present "Cromarty site [re-named as such in 1958?"]" to the Sydney Tennis Association, Limited, for 1 dollar in 1905. However, you might want to also note that Hugh was perhaps dead (if not earlier) as early as 1901 for in that year there was the following property transfer: "Heirs of Hugh McLeod to Donald McDonald, $1". Is this our "Rev."?

PRESS RELEASE

Government of Canada Announces Funding for Tennis Program

SYDNEY, October 3, 2003 -- Mark Eyking, Member of Parliament (Sydney -Victoria), on behalf of Secretary of State (Physical Activity and Sport)
Paul DeVillers, today announced funding of $55,000 to support Tennis Canada's Building Tennis Communities program.

"The Building Tennis Communities program emphasizes the benefits of sport participation and ensures a stronger future in the development of tennis in  Canada," said Mr. Eyking. "The program offers young children the opportunity to develop life skills, and to learn important values that lead to strong, healthy communities. Programs such as this instil a lifelong love of sport." Eighteen communities across the country have been involved in the program, with the goal of involving more participants in tennis and keeping them playing throughout their lives. It focuses on encouraging tennis participation within the whole community, not only within the tennis club. Partnerships with community leaders facilitate the growth and sustainability of the program.

"We are very pleased to receive this funding from Sport Canada," said Alan Trivett, Tennis Canada's Executive Director of Tennis Development. "The Building Tennis Communities program is an integral part of tennis development across the country and having these extra funds will be incredibly helpful in our mission to get more people playing the game." Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through Sport Canada's Sport Participation Development Program. The program aims to increase participation in sport, and was developed on the basis that all Canadians should have access to and benefit from participating in quality sport activities at all levels.

Tennis Canada also received $630,000 in funding from Sport Canada in 2003-04, including $100,000 for disabled athletes.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.

Rankings

OUR PLAYERS: 2006 RANKINGS

  • Year 2006 - Bill Buckland World Singles Rankings: 127 out of 790 Players

New ITF Seniors Rankings

The ITF Seniors singles rankings are calculated on a 52 week rollover system running from 2 May 2005 to 6 May 2006 with the best 4 singles results from the last twelve months making up an individual’s ranking. The cut off for this ranking is the end of week 17 in the ITF Seniors Calendar – USTA National Men’s 55 Indoor Champs, Boise (30 April to 6 May) – is the last event included in these rankings and therefore tournaments held in week 18 onwards will be included in the next rankings due to be published 1 July 2006.

Ranking points gained at last year’s ITF Super-seniors World Team and Individual Championships in Turkey, October 2005 are included as are ranking points gained at the recently completed ITF Seniors World Team and Individual Championships in Durban, South Africa, April 2006.

SYDNEY - Tennis, anyone?

The Cromarty Tennis Club in Sydney has the answer to that question with the annual Cape Breton Open tournament slated to be played Friday evening through Monday afternoon.

"There'll be some good matches for sure over the weekend," said club director and competitor Bill Buckland of Sydney, explaining that the tournament will feature an open division, and over-35, over-45 and over-55 masters divisions.

"With the masters and the open, we could see 50 to 75 players this weekend."
One of those players will be Chris Matthews, 35, of Sydney, who won the 2007 Cape Breton Open men's open, defeating Daryl MacPherson in the final, 6-4, 6-1.

"It's really competitive in the open here," said Matthews, who is ranked fourth in Nova Scotia among men's singles open players after winning the Peter Durdle Memorial tournament in New Waterford, July 13, and the Smashing Invitational tournament in Lower Sackville, May 18.
Matthews, who also played in and won the over-35 division in 2007, only plans on competing in the open division this year.

"It was just too much tennis," said Matthews of playing nine singles matches over three days at the 2007 Cape Breton Open. "That was pretty taxing on the body. The body can only take so much."

Matthews, who is married to Cape Breton native Lisa Hollohan, grew up playing tennis in Sudbury, Ont., eventually becoming one of the top-10 players in that province.

But he dropped the sport when he landed a teaching job in Sioux Lookout in northwestern Ontario.

"There's not really any tennis there," said Matthews, explaining that he didn't play for about eight years, until he returned to Sudbury in his late 20s.

"When I moved back to Sudbury I was able to connect back with the club there and got back into it."
Now Matthews is looking for a teaching job, either in the Sydney area or Halifax, and teaching local competitors a thing or two about tennis in the meantime.

"He'll be one of the favourites in the open category in the men's singles," Buckland said of Matthews. "Mind you, we expect to see some Halifax players here this weekend."

The Cape Breton Open draw is expected to be released by Tennis Nova Scotia today and appear in Friday's edition of the Cape Breton Post. Admission is free and there are bleachers from which to view the action.

Veteran Tennis Player a Winner - Gordon Verge, Former Cromarty Player

Lorne Main / Gordon Verge

Newly-crowned world doubles champion has a great ring to it, and Gordon Verge is the first to admit, “I’m still on cloud nine, as never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect that.”

The local 75-year-old spark-plug was recently in Perth, Australia, where once again he was competing with the Canadian Tennis Team at the ITF 2009 Super Seniors World Team and Individual Tennis Championships.

Annual tennis tournament opens today at Cromarty Tennis Club

Mojeiko faces daunting task at Cape Breton Open

Annual tennis tournament opens today at Cromarty Tennis Club

By T.J. Colello
Cape Breton Post
SYDNEY - Fifteen-year-old Mattvei Mojeiko is back at his birthplace in Cape Breton visiting relatives when his mother signed him up for the Bell and Grant Cape Breton Open/Masters tournament at Cromarty Tennis Club, which gets underway today.
No big deal, right?
What Mojeiko later found out once the draw was released was that he'd face the tournament's top seed and two-time men's open division champion Chris Matthews in his first match, Saturday morning. Matthews, a former Sydney resident, is about 20 years older and is also the No. 8-seeded player in Nova Scotia. Matthews also boasts an 8-1 record in tournament play this summer and has captured two events and was runner-up in a third.

"I was at a summer camp in Boston and then I came over here and my mom said 'oh, by the way, you're in a tournament,'" he said of his mother, Cape Breton native Kathleen (McCluskey) Mojeiko.
"She was shocked," said Mattvei, when his mother learned her son would play the top seed in his first match. "I'm a wreck of nerves right now thinking about that match because he's probably going to cream me."
Mojeiko was born in Cape Breton, but when he was six-weeks-old his mother Kathleen and father Vladimir Mojeiko, a native of Russia, moved to Beijing, China. They're back in Cape Breton visiting Kathleen's parents Terry and Mary Lou McCluskey of Sydney River.
The teenager says he's been playing tennis now for about four years and competes at the varsity level at his school, but hasn't played in many tournaments. But despite his reservations in facing Matthews, he said he simply won't give the champ a free pass.
"I'll put everything I've got into that match and if I lose, there's no shame in losing, but if I win, it's a bonus," said Mojeiko, who notes both his forehand and serve as his strengths. "I'm going to play my heart out and try everything I have."
If Mojeiko's name sounds familiar, there's a good reason. He had the opportunity to carry the Olympic torch when the Summer Games were held in Beijing last year. After he entered an online contest and didn't win, Coca-Cola later chose him as a torchbearer in Xi'an, the capital city of the Shaanxi province.
"It was one of the most memorable moments in my life, carrying the torch," he said. "No one here has really mentioned it I guess, but people in Beijing talk to me about it all the time."
Along with the men's open singles, there will also be men's 35-and-over singles, 45-and-over singles and masters doubles. The women's side will see 35-and-over singles, masters singles and masters doubles. There will also be masters mixed play.
The championship matches are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

O’Neill hoping for net gain of female players
Published on July 29, 2010
T.J. Colello

SYDNEY — Anne O’Neill started teaching for the first time at Cromarty Tennis Club this summer in the hopes of setting an example for young female players getting their start in the sport.

It’s also the same reason she’s hitting the court this weekend for the annual Cape Breton Open for the first time.“I just want to see more females compete, basically, and get more females involved in the sport,” said O’Neill. She’s been playing tennis for about 10 years. “There’s good tennis players and good matches.”

The 16-year-old from Sydney has played in the Cape Breton Junior Open in the past and has boasted a number of second-place finishes. She’ll look to put that streak to rest in the women’s open division this weekend.

“I’m a bit nervous, but I’m sure if you put your mind to it, you can get anything accomplished,” said O’Neill, noting her backhand as her strength.

“I’ve been practising, so hopefully, everything goes well. I like to compete.”

Fifty competitors will take part in the tournament, competing in the men’s open singles and open doubles, women’s open singles and open doubles, masters men’s doubles, open mixed and masters mixed and men’s 45-and-over and 55-and-over singles.

O’Neill said being instructor this summer has also helped her prepare for this weekend’s event.

“It makes you want to practice more,” she said. “I’ve been coming down more nights, so definitely.”

Jamie Power of Halifax, the No. 8 ranked player in the province, is the top seed on the men’s side. Cromarty member Claire Rogers is the top women’s seed for the tournament.

Play begins today and wraps up, Sunday.

NOVA SCOTIA JUNIOR TEAM TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS - 2010 RESULTS

TEAM CROMARTY

Cape Breton fielded two of the seven teams in the event, which was held at the Waegwoltic club in Halifax. CB 1 went 4-0 overall in preliminary round play, while CB 2 went 1-2 overall in prelims. In the elimination rounds, CB 2 played strong to defeat the Waegwoltic team and capture third place with an 11-7 score. In the 1-2 playoff, CB 1 battled tough to grind out a 10-9 overtime victory over rival club Truro. After taking a narrow 6-5 lead, Truro was able to close the gap and tie at 7-7 heading into the doubles rubbers. After Truro captured 2 of the first 3 doubles points and built a 9-8 lead, the weight fell squarely on the CB u11 boys team of Derek Gentile and Aidan McNutt. With raucous crowd support and trailing 3-1, the duo was able to grasp a miracle win, saving 6 championship points in the process. Tied at 9-9, the u14 mixed team of Nathan Cloake and Becky Hanna dominated their rivals, clinching the match 6-0 and the Championship for Cape Breton.

Games declared a success by athletes, organizers Julie Collins - Cape Breton Post

SYDNEY — The games are over, the people have spoken and the Canada 55+ Games in Cape Breton have been deemed among the best in the nine-year history of the competition.

The national event, held every two years for seniors across the country, took competitors all around of Cape Breton to use local facilities and sample local culture, Wednesday through Saturday.

“The tennis has been very well run, the people here have been friendly,” said John Dubeau of Penetanguishene, Ont., who was found enjoying tennis matches at Cromarty Tennis Club.

“As a matter of fact, a couple of the people we know who were heading back to Ontario were given sandwiches. They had to wait until the sandwiches were ready before they could leave. You can’t beat hospitality like that.”

Dubeau also gave a glowing endorsement of his accommodations, the Harbour Front Bed and Breakfast in North Sydney, and the various forms of entertainment he found while in the area.

“The hospitality you guys have shown is next to nothing, trust me,” added Darcy Rohatyn, a hockey player with Team Saskatchewan.

“Will I come back? In a heartbeat. Do I want to leave? Not at this point in time.”

Like many athletes in the games, Rohatyn arrived in town early and used the extra time to tour the area and sample the night life.

“Trust me, you guys are fantastic people. You are almost Saskatchewinians. From the bottom of my heart I thank the Cape Bretoners for hosting this. It has been a pleasure and the experience will live on and on and on.”

“The hospitality you guys have shown is next to nothing, trust me.” - Darcy Rohatyn, a hockey player with Team Saskatchewan
Ray Paruch heard similar comments throughout the games from many of the 1,500 athletes who participated. He gave much of the credit to the small games staff and an army of volunteers numbering close to 400.

“I’ve been in every single venue in the CBRM and I’ve seen smiles on the faces of the participants,” said Paruch, the chair of the games.

“We all know the depth of the volunteer base that we have here from as far back as the 1987 Canada Games. The volunteers are happy to do what they do best. People will talk to them about where to go, what to do, where to eat. It’s just been a big success story for the CBRM and probably for the island in general.”

After four days of competition, Saturday’s games activities included medal ceremonies and a gala closing ceremony at Centre 200.

The economic benefit of the games has been estimated at over $4 million. The games will also leave a legacy in the area thanks to the creation of some facilities to host competitions and the upgrade of others.

Centre 200, for example, hosted curling events and now has the ability to host national events in that sport.

A Glace Bay bowling alley and horseshoe facilities in New Waterford are other legacy examples.

Cape Breton hosted ‘best ever’ 55+ games

Published on September 21, 2012

Cape Breton people are truly special, and they certainly proved it when they hosted the Canada 55+ Games, Aug. 27-Sept. 1. The warm, caring hospitality shown to us Westerners was outstanding, and evident always and everywhere.

The games were organized in the spirit they were intended: fair play, good competition, fun and camaraderie.

We can’t say enough to thank the citizens of Sydney and area, and the hundreds of volunteers involved in the games who made them the best ever. We were impressed with the first-class facilities you have in Sydney and area.

We had an unforgettable experience at the Cromarty Tennis Club, and we thank Bill, Kevin, Graham and the many others who made each day the best. You also let us bring home the coveted gold medal. You are the best.

A truly special thank you to Judy, our host, who graciously took us into her home and cared for us, along with her exceptional neighbours, Jan and Noreen, who always seemed to be there to help.

Thank you for everything.

Mary Gardiner, Red Deer, Alta.; Dee Ann Clark, Calgary, Alta.

MAY 7

Cromarty ready to swing into new season
Published on May 7, 2013
Elizabeth Patterson

SYDNEY — The Cromarty Tennis Club is heading into their summer season with a new executive and an upbeat attitude.

“We’re all set for the current year,” said club vice-president Bill Buckland. “We have a pro hired and an administrator. Kevin Hall is a level two coach and he’s going to be running our junior program. And we have an executive for the year all set up.”

Registration will be held Saturday and Sunday. There’s learn to play and the regular junior program. The club also offers team tennis, seniors have tennis in the morning and there’s a competitive night on Wednesdays.

The new executive consists of Mike Pace, president, Buckland, vice-president, Kevin Thomas, treasurer, and David Clemens, secretary.

Club pro Hall has already embarked on a busy season, running the junior program, giving lessons and encouraging people to take up the sport.

“I do a spring program for the kids which we started last year for the first time,” he said. “We’re doing that again this year. It gives them a head start since people in other areas like Halifax play all year round because they have indoor facilities. We don’t have that luxury. We start in April for all the competitive kids who want to play in tournaments.”

To encourage children to take up the sport, Hall said someone from Tennis Nova Scotia will be visiting several local schools from May 20-24. The club will also be home to several tournaments this year including the Cape Breton junior regionals, July 15-18; the Bell and Grant Cape Breton Open Masters and Class A, Aug. 2-4 and the CCITC National Living Healthy 55+ team tennis doubles tournament, Aug. 31 to Sept. 2.

“It would be nice to see people give it a try,” said Hall. “People are missing out because it’s a really great game. You can play it your whole life. You can play it at any skill level, any age. There’s people here that are over 80 who still play like they’re in their teens. There are not too many sports that you can do that.”

AUGUST 1

Anne O’Neill of Sydney, an instructor and club manager at Cromarty Tennis Club, will be one of the participants competing in the Bell and Grant Cape Breton Open. The tournament runs today to Sunday at Cromarty. T.J. Colello – Cape Breton Post

Tennis, anyone?

Players from across the Maritimes to compete at Cape Breton Open this weekend at Cromarty Tennis Club

SYDNEY — Anne O’Neill enters the Bell and Grant Cape Breton Open looking to both improve her game and take it one point at a time in the hopes of winning a division title.

The 19-year-old instructor and club manager at Cromarty Tennis Club will no doubt have plenty of support in the stands, especially from the junior membership that’s enjoyed resurgence this summer.

“It’s the first time we’ve hit over 100 juniors in almost 10 years, so it’s really special,” she said. “Tennis is growing in the community, so it’s nice to see. Hopefully, we’ll get an indoor tennis facility at some point.

“Adult membership is really high this year too. We also have over 100 members in the adults, so the club is over 200 members, which is really great to see in comparison to other years.”

O’Neill said she joined the summer program at Cromarty at the age of six and caught the bug from there, and enjoys both the competitive and social aspects of the game. She’s been coaching for the past four years, something she calls a “dream job.”

“It’s the kids that bring you to work and to see how much they love it and how much you have an impact on them is something special.”

This will be O’Neill’s fourth year competing in the Cape Breton Open. She’ll play in the women’s open singles, where she’ll likely see competition from past champion and fellow Cromarty member Kelly McNeil. O’Neill will also compete in women’s open doubles with Abbey MacLeod of the New Waterford Tennis Club and in mixed open doubles with Carter Bown of Cromarty.

Other divisions include men’s open singles, men’s open doubles, men’s class ‘A’ and master’s singles (45-and-over).

The men’s open features Chris Matthews of Dartmouth, as well as Glenn Hubbard and Bill Mosher of Halifax, top-ranked players in the province. They join the likes of Cromarty head coach Kevin Hall, fresh off a win at the Peter Durdle Memorial Tournament in New Waterford, as well as defending champion and former Cromarty coach Liam MacDonald. Cromarty members Bill Buckland and Norman Ross will be favourites in the master’s division.

“It’s a great opportunity to come watch because we don’t get this high level of tennis all the time here in Cape Breton,” said O’Neill. “It’s the second largest open tennis tournament in Nova Scotia, so it’ll be a very interesting weekend, for sure.”

Play opens today and concludes on Sunday.

Annual tournament at Cromarty Tennis Club opens this weekend

SYDNEY — The annual Cape Breton Open tennis tournament will boast one of the best draws it’s ever had this weekend, and local competitor Kevin Hall will be in the thick of things.

Kevin Hall of Sydney will be one of the local favourites in the men’s open division at this year’s Cape Breton Open tennis tournament at Cromarty Tennis Club in Sydney.

The 23-year-old from Sydney and head instructor at the host Cromarty Tennis Club will compete in the men’s open division against some challenging Halifax opponents.

Phil Anderson, last year’s Nova Scotia Open men’s singles champion, comes in as the favourite. He’s ranked No. 33 overall in Canada and first in the province. Anderson grew up playing against the likes of Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil in their junior days. He won the Cape Breton Open as a 15 year old in 2005.

Also registered to compete are John Oxner, a strong junior competitor, and Jamie Power, who’s ranked fifth in the province. Chris Matthews will be back to defend his title from last year.

“It’s been a while since we had some top players, so it’s good to see we’re getting some names back,” said Hall, last year’s men’s singles runner up. “Hopefully, that’ll continue on into the future.

“For me, I don’t get as much competitive play around here, so it’ll be finally nice to get some competitive play with the top players down. It’ll be tough for me, though. I’ve never played with those guys. Maybe once a year when you go up to Halifax and New Brunswick.”

In the women’s singles, Isobel Anderson of Halifax is one of the top entries. Anderson was runner up in last year’s final and is one of the top junior players in the province.

The men’s masters will include defending champion Bill Buckland of Sydney, who will be joined by competitors Norman Ross of Sydney Mines, Kevin Thomas of New Waterford and Pavel Jockel of Halifax.

New to the tournament this year are the boy’s and girl’s 18-under divisions. Hall has seen resurgence in junior tennis in recent years. Cromarty has close to 100 junior members.

“It’s definitely a good sign,” he said. “It’s something we needed a couple years ago. Tennis was dying for quite a while here and now it’s finally coming back up.”

Play opens on Friday at 5 p.m. Championship matches will be contested on Sunday and Monday.

Taking it one ball at a time

Liam Brann, 12, chases down the ball during a mini game of tennis at the Cromarty Tennis Club in Sydney on Saturday morning.
It was part of the Rogers Rookie Tour, which is a starter program for junior level tennis players across the country,
with the hope of increasing participation in the game among children.

Rogers Rookie Tour at Cromarty Tennis Club introduces kids to the sport Saturday

SYDNEY — For two hours Saturday morning children were paired up playing tennis, many of them for the first time.

Instructors at the Cromarty Tennis Club gave the children — students from Brookland and Cusack elementary schools — some basic tips on how to hold the racket, how to serve, and how to score the game.

The mini tournament is part of the nationwide Rogers Rookie Tour that looks to get children introduced to the game at the junior level.

Kevin Hall, head coach at the tennis club, said instructors from the club and Tennis Nova Scotia officials spoke to students in both Brookland and Cusack schools this week about trying it out.

“We wanted to show them that playing tennis is an option in the area,” Hall said.

He said there were about 25 students from both schools on the courts for the rookie tour.

Brookland elementary Grade 4 student Curtis Fogarty was surprised he liked playing tennis after his first few games on the court, Saturday.

“I sort of wanted to try tennis because I never tried it before. It’s really good,” Fogarty, 10, said.

“Yeah, I’ll do it again.”

He lost his matchup with Grade 6 student Liam Brann, who also attends Brookland.

But Brann, 12, has previous experience on the tennis court, and he’s now thinking he might want to start playing competitively at the junior level.

“I forgot how much I liked it because I didn’t get to play it very often. When they came into our school, and I started to play it, and got really into it,” he said.

Brann said he started playing for fun as a six-year-old, and did have a membership at the Cromarty Tennis Club until his family started spending their summers at their cottage in Ben Eoin, with tennis courts nearby.

For their participation in the Rogers Rookie Tour, each child was given a package consisting of a t-shirt as well as a water bottle and wristband.

Hall said membership in the club has been increasing for the past few years after several seasons of a decline in numbers.

There are about 100 junior tennis players, those members between the ages of five and 18, at the club, he said.

“We’re seeing a lot more kids. The biggest thing is that they’re not just coming to lessons anymore, they’re actually staying on the court, and the courts are being filled up pretty much every day, which is good to see.”

Summer registration at Cromarty Tennis Club continues today and Sunday from 12-3 p.m.

An additional day of registration will be held on June 27 from 1-3 p.m.
