As
discussed during the last executive meeting:
I was
into UCCB today and began researching the Cromarty Tennis Club. Lots and
lots of stuff to look at. For those who were not at this meeting, I have
agreed - more than happy - to do this historical research at no charge
to the Club.
At any
rate, Sydney was an exciting place to be at the turn of the 20th
century, and there was enthusiasm in the town perhaps unmatched at any
time in its history.
Believe
it or not, in "sports", golf ruled King - at least amongst
Kings (i.e. bankers and lawyers, and even the clergy). Cricket and
baseball were happenings - and were widely popular with the common
folks. As for Tennis - the North Sydney Club was very active, and able
to raise funds; but in previously poor old Sydney, Tennis had entered
harder days, no doubt as North Sydney became the more richer and
populous of the two.
But
suddenly, because of steel and coal, Sydney's population went from 2,427
in 1891 to 9,908 in 1901. In the same year, Howard Ross [Howard S. Ross
(1872-post 1926)], a lawyer (and
well known on the links at Victoria Park), called for "a meeting of
those interested in Lawn Tennis and in carrying on the old club
...". That year, H. H. Sutherland was even selling "The
celebrated Good-Year Glove Tennis Shoes (with white soles) ~ for Ladies
and Gentlemen.." which I suppose might be popular for events other
than tennis! (i.e. boating). This needs to be looked at.
Well,
Richard, you can see the problem here. We have to find out the
relationship between the "old club" and the "Sydney
Tennis Association, inc." before we can establish a founding date.
No doubt, their locations are different (possible the old club was at
Victoria Park?), and their surfaces may even be different (grass versus
clay), but if there is a connection - i.e. one begot the other - , we
should go with that since the older that we can establish our club, the
better our bragging rights when going against say Halifax for money.
Indeed, if the club dates back another 50 years, or so, to the Victorian
age, we may have a 150 anniversary for example.
Of
interest, the 9 hole course at Victoria Park was declared, in 1901, as
being the oldest course in the province. Et Tu the Tennis Club as well?
Now - I
would suggest that we get a new sign on which the
"establishment" date could be added at a later date. I will be
away later this month and into much of September on a Ottawa/St. Louis
research trip and so I can't really do much more research until after
that (but which I will do as promised), and I have some roof work to do
this week each afternoon while the rain possibility seems clear. So if
we could wait a bit, until the fall, for the "est." date, this
would be best.
Something
else to think about - You gave me the info - that Ken Haley dug up -
that the Rev. Hugh McLeod
[1803-1894]
granted the present "Cromarty site
[re-named as such in 1958?"]" to the Sydney Tennis
Association, Limited, for 1 dollar in 1905. However, you might want to
also note that Hugh was perhaps dead (if not earlier) as early as 1901
for in that year there was the following property transfer: "Heirs
of Hugh McLeod to Donald McDonald, $1". Is this our
"Rev."? Eric Krause |

Tennis Communities program in Canada

PRESS RELEASE
Government of Canada Announces Funding
for Tennis Program
SYDNEY, October 3, 2003 -- Mark Eyking,
Member of Parliament (Sydney -Victoria), on behalf of Secretary of State
(Physical Activity and Sport)
Paul DeVillers, today announced funding of $55,000 to support Tennis
Canada's Building Tennis Communities program.
"The Building Tennis Communities
program emphasizes the benefits of sport participation and ensures a
stronger future in the development of tennis in Canada," said Mr.
Eyking. "The program offers young children the opportunity to develop
life skills, and to learn important values that lead to strong, healthy
communities. Programs such as this instil a lifelong love of sport."
Eighteen communities across the country have been involved in the
program, with the goal of involving more participants in tennis and
keeping them playing throughout their lives. It focuses on encouraging
tennis participation within the whole community, not only within the
tennis club. Partnerships with community leaders facilitate the growth
and sustainability of the program.
"We are very pleased to receive this
funding from Sport Canada," said Alan Trivett, Tennis Canada's Executive
Director of Tennis Development. "The Building Tennis Communities program
is an integral part of tennis development across the country and having
these extra funds will be incredibly helpful in our mission to get more
people playing the game." Financial assistance is provided by the
Department of Canadian Heritage through Sport Canada's Sport
Participation Development Program. The program aims to increase
participation in sport, and was developed on the basis that all
Canadians should have access to and benefit from participating in
quality sport activities at all levels.
Tennis Canada also received $630,000
in funding from Sport Canada in 2003-04, including $100,000 for disabled
athletes.
Funding for this project was provided
for in the February 2003 federal Budget.

SYDNEY - Tennis, anyone?
The Cromarty Tennis Club in Sydney has the answer to
that question with the annual Cape Breton Open tournament slated to be
played Friday evening through Monday afternoon.
"There'll be some good matches for sure over the
weekend," said club director and competitor Bill Buckland of Sydney,
explaining that the tournament will feature an open division, and
over-35, over-45 and over-55 masters divisions.
"With the masters and the open, we could see 50 to 75
players this weekend."
One of those players will be Chris Matthews, 35, of Sydney, who won the
2007 Cape Breton Open men's open, defeating Daryl MacPherson in the
final, 6-4, 6-1.
"It's really competitive in the open here," said
Matthews, who is ranked fourth in Nova Scotia among men's singles open
players after winning the Peter Durdle Memorial tournament in New
Waterford, July 13, and the Smashing Invitational tournament in Lower
Sackville, May 18.
Matthews, who also played in and won the over-35 division in 2007, only
plans on competing in the open division this year.
"It was just too much tennis," said Matthews of
playing nine singles matches over three days at the 2007 Cape Breton
Open. "That was pretty taxing on the body. The body can only take so
much."
Matthews, who is married to Cape Breton native Lisa
Hollohan, grew up playing tennis in Sudbury, Ont., eventually becoming
one of the top-10 players in that province.
But he dropped the sport when he landed a teaching
job in Sioux Lookout in northwestern Ontario.
"There's not really any tennis there," said Matthews,
explaining that he didn't play for about eight years, until he returned
to Sudbury in his late 20s.
"When I moved back to Sudbury I was able to connect
back with the club there and got back into it."
Now Matthews is looking for a teaching job, either in the Sydney area or
Halifax, and teaching local competitors a thing or two about tennis in
the meantime.
"He'll be one of the favourites in the open category
in the men's singles," Buckland said of Matthews. "Mind you, we expect
to see some Halifax players here this weekend."
The Cape Breton Open draw is expected to be released
by Tennis Nova Scotia today and appear in Friday's edition of the Cape
Breton Post. Admission is free and there are bleachers from which to
view the action.
