Mortar: Engineer at Heritage Conservation Directorate, Ottawa, has specified a Type N 1:1:6 mortar (one part white Portland cement, one part Type SA lime and 6 parts of aggregate). Because of difficulties in purchasing a small quantity of Type SA lime, D. Carter has proposed a Type N pre-mixed mortar from St. Lawrence Cement (awaiting technical data from St. Lawrence). S. Myers has noted availability of another alternative, King 1:1:6 Type N pre-mixed mortar; being used on PWGSC project (Bedford Row Tower) in Halifax for the past year. Although not as good a visual match as the site-mixed 1:1:6 mortar specified (smoother looking mortar and gray in colour), this product meets the specifications in terms of compressive strength and air content, and has proven performance (extensive mortar testing conducted for Bedford Row project). S. Myers distributed test results for King 1:1:6 mortar; will photograph King mortar at Bedford Row and circulate via e-mail ...
