RESEARCH VISIT TO THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF CANADA (OTTAWA), JULY 12-15, 2004 ~ CONTENT REPORT
Eric
Krause, Krause House Info-Research Solutions I visited the National Archives of Canada (Ottawa - July 13-15, 2004) to examine some of the material described in my visit of September 12, 2002. Lynda Krause provided transcription and scanning of documents assistance. Although NAC stated that the following material was accessioned since 1994-10-01, clearly some of the microfilm had been acquired and been available since a much earlier time, and examined in France by Louisbourg Research staff during the 1960's. Apparently, for example, when a reel of microfilm is withdrawn from use, and replaced by an identical copy, then it is re-accessioned, but yet replaced with the same earlier number. At any rate, the higher numbered reels are generally those which indeed were acquired since 1994 (A good hint for future research). However, while examining the lower numbered ones, I did encounter some which the Fortress of Louisbourg does not have and should acquire. The procedure was as follows owing to time restraints. Reels were scanned for Louisbourg/Isle Royale/Isle St. Jean references and when the first one was identified, the entire microfilm was flagged for acquisition by the Fortress. Sometimes, a reel is flagged for purchase as well when its content would prove useful to the Fortress for related research such as period building materials and techniques. As well, in some cases, the Fortress may already have the Louisbourg reference, but not the other useful, non-Louisbourg material on a reel flagged for purchase.
There was
no attempt to provide a finding aid, or list references of a
significant nature owing to time constraints. This could be achieved
once the reels are received at the Fortress (when and if ordered.) At
NAC, there are finding aids which are microfilm shelf lists and provide
dates and descriptions for those volumes which have been microfilmed in
whole or in part, but time constraints did not allow this researcher the
time to consult them during the visit under review. Reels that are described as being too early or too late (before 1713 and after 1768) were generally not scanned unless they covered the period 1784-1785 when Louisbourg was somewhat significant during the founding of Sydney.
