Joan E. Harriss, Sydney, 1919-2001

CAPE BRETON POST, MAY 24, 2001

Sydney mourns the passing of one of its most loved and respected citizens. Joan E. Harries passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Bathurst, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Roy F. and Hazel (Ham) Young.

Joan served as Norwegian Vice-Council and was awarded the Knight of Olaf medal for long-time family service, dating back to the Second World War. Following the death of her father in 1964, Joan took over the family business, J.A. Young & Son, and in 1985, Joan retired as the owner/manager when the business was sold. She served as Chairlady of the 1975 United Way Campaign. Joan had a keen interest in anything marine and served on the Sydney Harbour Ports Regional Development Board and played an active role in developing cruise ship visits to our harbour. In 1986, she was named Citizen of the Year. Following four years of retirement, she took on a project that was to leave her legacy to the city and its people. She spearheaded and supervised the restoration of Jost Heritage House. During this lime, she received the Lescarbot Award from the Government of Canada. For her work in heritage preservation and contributions to the business community, Joan received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from U.C.C.B. She served as Chairlady of the Board of Directors on the A.G. Bell Institute at U.C.C.B. and was on the Board of Directors of the Beaton Institute and the Old Sydney Society. Joan was a valued member of Bethel Friendship Guild and took an active role in church activities.

Surviving is her husband Victor J. Harriss.

In keeping with her wishes, them will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church on Friday 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Robert Lyle and Rev. Adam Lees officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Arrangements under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jost Heritage House. P.O. Box 1925, Sydney.

BUSINESS LEADERS HONOURED

Five familiar names in the business scene will be the first inductees into a Cape Breton Business Hall of Fame.

"We looked for accomplished people who have achieved success in business and the community over a significant period of time," said Sydney and Area Chamber of Commerce president  John Nash.

The chamber and University College of Cape Breton have established the hall of fame in recognition of the important role played by area business people in promoting the Cape Breton economy. it is also being established in an effort to nuture the needs of students seeking business as a career.

This year's inductees are retired clothier and community activist jack Yazer. Millville farmer and community leader John Eyking, Michael and Chris Dezagiacomo, owners of the Tasty Treat outlets, and the late Sydney businesswoman Joan Harris [sic. Harriss], (J.A. Young and Sons Travel Agency).

A dinner in their honor will be held Friday, Set. 27, beginning at 6 p.m. with a reception to be held in the Delta Sydney.

Proceeds from the dinner and private donations will be used to establish scholarships to returning business students at UCCB.

Nash said an appropriate tribute listing the names of the honorees will be placed at the university.
