1789


Halifax, June 7.

Wednesday his Majesty's ship Thisbe, Captain Hood, arrived here from cape breton. The gentlemen of the Thisbe report, that the weather was remarkably severe at that place. On the 27th ult. they had a very thick snow storm; the rigging, sails, &c. were stiffened with frost, and every thing still wore the gloomy appearance of winter.

Monday arrived the schooner Success, Captain Tulloch, from South Carolina. She was seized by the Thisbe frigate, but released again the next day.

Same day the schooner Ann, Capt. Selloch, arrived here from New York. This vessel was also seized by the Thisbe, for having on board contraband articles, and still remains in custody.

Tuesday arrived the schooner Swallow, Capt. Heckman, from Boston, but last from Lunenburg; at which place she was seized by the Brisk sloop of war, and has come round here in custody of one of the Brisk's officers.

Among other persons to whom Mons. l'Abbé Barut introduced me, was the marquis de Goutte, chef d'escadre of the French fleet, who was taken by admiral Boscawen at Louisbourg, in 1758, and carried to England, where he learned English, of which he yet retains something. ...
