Is This The Cuyler Claim Described Above?
[p. 20]
... Being ordered to appear before the Governor in Council respecting some lots of Sydney belonging to the Revd. Mr. Cossit and a Mr. Sparrow whose Agent I was, and being informed that Govr. Macarmick had altered the original design of the Town, & intended to block up the Street along Mr. Sparrows lots, by laying it not into Lots, I observed how considerably this would reduce the Value of Mr. Sparrows property who had been two years in possession and had laid not a Considerable Sum in fences and improvements; the Govr. replied he wanted [his] advice. Mr. Cuyler being present, claimed a prior right to Mr. Sparrow & to the Revd. Mr. Cossit, although he had actually the returns of Survey in his own Office for the purpose of making not the grants accordingly. To explain how groundless Mr. Culyer's Claim was, I produced Copies of Mr. Cossit's Letters to Mr. Cuyler in Mr. Cossit's hand writing, Mr. Cuyler [p. 21] Cuyler denied having received the Originals and used very unbecoming & indecent language towards Mr. Cossit Firstly: Lieut Col. Graham, who then was of the Council [on council October 22, 1787-December 16, 1788], second [?] Mr. Cuyler in scurrilation And added that the letters were forged; But Mr. Mathewa was obliged to declare he had seen [them] in the hands of Mr. Cossit.

and Ellen Kelly. They had a daughter Mary, b. 8 Nov. 1876 in Louisbourg. She
married William Chandler in 1897 in Halifax. George drowned circa 1885.
Other children were Winstow b 1880, Margaret married Joseph Pellow,
Elisabeth married Frank Wiley, and John killed in action April 2, 1918.
George's family was supposed to have lived inside the ruins of Fortress
Louisbourg and a number of years ago I was told that a house owned by the
Cryer family still existed in Louisbourg although it had been moved. -

It should be noted here that on June 15th, 1789, the Council
granted fifty petitions for land. Those petitioners receiving land in the
district of Louisbourg were: .... George Cryer (two lots in Block G and two
hundred acres on the Louisbourg Road); ...The proclamation of 1790 probably
made the grants useless. It is to be noted further that none of these lots
seem to have been in the Old Town of Louisbourg. - Web fortress.cbu.ca/search/Foster4.html

LOT 5 [CHARLOTTE], LOT 6 [CHARLOTTE], LOT 7 [CHARLOTTE]- JAMES CROWDY
FRONT OF BLOCK C (WATER LOT) - PETER DELISLE
1820 --- Delisle, Peter
Petition to Stewart: Petitioner, a native of Guernsey, has
lived three years in Cape Breton. He asks the water lots in
front of block C, Sydney, as a site for wharf and stores.
Report of Crawley to Crowdy: Lots 4, 5, 6, and 7 in front of
block C. Plan. [Cape Breton no.: 2337 NSARM microfilm:

His principal associates and helpers were Thomas Crawley, Andrew Sellon and Peter deLisle, the home of the last named being the most frequently used meeting place. These men together planned for and with little delay erected a small meeting house which until 1866 stood upon a plot of ground, now vacant, on the West side of Charlotte Street and about two hundred yards from the Park Gate. [Joseph G. Angwin, Methodism in Cape Breton, 1789-1914 ; a retrospect (1914) - http://www.archive.org/details/methodismincapeb00angw ]
In 1866, the old chapel was superseded by a new church ad joining it, the situation being on the west side of Charlotte street, near to the Park Gate. This newer church (Jubilee) , was moved, in 1880, from the original site to a more central position on the corner of Dorchester and George Streets, and at the same time it was altered, enlarged and beautified. - [D. W. Johnston, History of Methodism in eastern British America : including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Bermuda (Sackville, N.B.: Tribune Printing Co, [c. 1925]), p. 83 - http://www.archive.org/details/historyofmethodi00johnuoft ]
Peter de Lisle, a Jersey merchant, was influential in the organization of a church in Sydney in 1829 ... [S. D. Clark, Church and Sect in Canada (University of Toronto Press, 1948]

RONALD J. MACDONALD [R J MACDONALD] - 96 CHARLOTTE
CLARENCE MACDONALD - [96 CHARLOTTE?]
YOUNGEST SON OF DEPUTY-CHIEF PASSES IN ANNEX A member of the Merchant Marine service prior to and since the outbreak of the war, Clarence MacDonald, 28, son of Deputy Chief of Police R J MacDonald, and Mrs MacDonald, died early this morning in the City hospital annex where he had been a patient for the past week. He was stricken ill in Halifax a couple of weeks ago, and subsequently removed to Sydney where he entered the annex. His condition was critical at the time and everything that medical science could contrive to stem the progress of his ailment proved futile, with death ensuing early today. He was well known in Sydney and throughout the industrial centres and a host of friends will learn of his passing with deep regret and the many friends and acquaintances of deputy chief MacDonald and Mrs MacDonald will sympathize with them in their sad bereavement. Unmarried, he is survived by his parents, also two brothers, Wilfred, also with the Merchant Navy; Harris, with the Dominion Construction Company at Point Edward; one sister, Mildred, of the staff of R J Logue Limited. The remains are reposing at the family residence, 96 Charlotte street, funeral arrangements to be announced later.

BLOCK C, LOT 4 [96-98 CHARLOTTE]
During its first decade and a half Sydney foundered because of internal political struggles, underdeveloped resources, and the transfer of the British regiment to Halifax. Ten years after its founding the population was only 95 and the tiny settlement resembled a ghost town. Of 44 inhabitable dwellings, 17 were unoccupied; another 27 lay in ruins. In some cases only the chimney remained to mark where the house had stood. By 1801, however, Sydney - began to recover. Soldiers once again occupied the barracks, coal mining operations on the north side of the harbour were streamlined, and the population of the area increased to 801. Built during this era of growth and development, 96-98 Charlotte bears little resemblance today to a house of that period. The north (or right hand) section was erected later and the second storey also may not have been original. The low-pitched roof was probably added after 1900. Strong, efficient, and cheaply constructed, this style of roof became popular whenever major repairs were necessary. Perhaps more than any other structural renovation, the flat roof has altered the original appearance of many of Sydney's oldest buildings.

Tenant found dead after apartment fire in Sydney
Husband in intensive care in hospital
Last Updated: Monday, July 6, 2009
A Sydney man tried to save his wife from their burning apartment on Sunday night, but thick, black smoke pushed him back, a tenant says.
Firefighters were called to 98 Charlotte St. just before 11 p.m.
By the time they arrived, the five-unit apartment building was fully engulfed in flames.
Cape Breton Regional Police said firefighters discovered a woman, in her 50s, in a bedroom on the second floor when they searched the building.
Her husband was rushed to the hospital and is in the intensive care unit. Police said it's believed he suffered from smoke inhalation.
Tenant Robert Stockley said he and the woman's husband tried to get her out.
Stockley said he could smell smoke when he got home Sunday night. The next minute, he heard yelling.
"I heard buddy hollering, 'Get up, get out, get up get … the place is on fire,'" he said.
The two men ran in through the kitchen, but the smoke was far too thick.
"You couldn't see her. It was just dark, blacker than black. And there was no way you could get her out. It was too fast. It was too quick," said Stockley.
Everyone else in the building escaped unharmed.
Police and officials with the fire marshal's office are investigating the cause of the fire.
